Becoming a cop.

I know we have a few memebers of this board that are police officers. I am looking for some advise. I have just turned in my application for police patrolman. This is something that I have thought about for many years and finally decided to give it a shot.

Were I am at this is a 6 phase proccess. I shouldn't have any troubles at all with the written or physical tests. I am not sure how I will do with the oral interview though. Should be OK but you never know.

Any advice to offer for increasing my chances? Anything I should look out for or common mistakes I should avoid?

try to get in for a ride along w/ an officer in the city you want to work, ask him/her questions.

Be completely honest on the background check and oral review board, they'd rather you have had made mistakes in the past than try to lie about them. you lie, you're done, you tell the truth, they wont hold the past against you to bad.

take tests in more than one city too, i know last year, columbus ohio had 3600 applicants and hired somthing like 150 officers, its very competitive so the more places you apply the better your chances.

If you know spanish consider going down to texas or the south west to appy, i know houstan often comes to columbus ohio to "recrute" applicants.

thats all i can think of now, this is all advice that has been given to me, i'm schedualed to take my exam coming up this november. If i think of anything else i'll post it.

Good Luck too you on your test. I was told they wont disclose your test score just a pass or fail.

We have a 9 step process here, but I forget what I had to do to pass. Iv'e been on for 13 1/2 years now.
It's a GREAT JOB! I remember one of my instructors telling our platoon, "The badge is a ticket to the greatest show on earth, just don't screw it up!". He was definately right! You'll see almost everything, disgusting & funny.

I got a buddy who just got on the police force, but is now leaving for the FBI. He said getting on police force was pretty easy. But it took him 2nd try to get in the FBI.

Psych test, polygraph, 500 questionson a computer in a certain amount of time, physical fitness, physical -including drug scan, backround check, 30 page questionare booklet on EVERYTHING I've ever done in my life, listen to a story then write an essay on it from memory, and something else...but I forget. Then, I had to pass a 9 month course at the academy. Out of 36 tests, you are only allowed to flunk once. If you fail the second one, you're out, no questions asked.
