Here's something I don't understand.
In the three and a half years that this message board has been online we have banned several hundred members. Most were flaming trolls who never came back but some were active members who stepped out of line again and again.
With several well-known troublemakers we have been more than lenient. The admins know that there are members who have been around a long time and who contribute a lot of positive energy to the community but seem to step out of line again and again. Slaps on the wrist and warning e-mails usually solve the problem for a time at least but sometimes the headache the member causes just isn't worth the benefit that they provide--so we delete the member permanently.
Most of the time, if that member has been around for more than a year or so and that person really wants to be a member of the community again they will e-mail us asking to be re-admitted. If they state their case and promise to really really really try to avoid causing trouble then we will give them a second chance and a new screen name--a fresh slate. We've done this a number of times and it almost always ends up for the better.
But some people attempt to sneak back under our noses thinking we won't notice. Not only do they create a fake new name but they go right back to their old tricks.
What I don't understand is why they do this. If they value this site and this community you'd figure they would be smart enough to try to be reasonable with us. Steve, Robert, and myself are humans--we understand that there are times in your life where everything is going wrong, you're on edge, and you're kicking yourself for that series of blatently inappropriate posts that resulted in your account getting wiped.
But if you're going to do nothing but cause trouble don't expect us to let you back. If we see you (and we eventually will), you'll be deleted once again. That's not a game anyone can win.
Should I add a note to the message board rules about this? "If you were banned and you feel this was unfair, please e-mail the administrators stating your case" or something like that?
Eh...
