  • Good News for Camaro people!

i read this over at NJFBOA.org, where i am a regular:

"It has been brought to my attention that the CAW no longer has any right to the name "Camaro", and now GM has control of the name.

For those who haven't been educated, back in 1987, GM gave full right to the CAW and the Ste.Therese plant to the Camaro and Firebird name for X amount of years. When production ended in '02, the agreement still stood, as well as the loans that GM has for the plant were still to be repaid. GM could not mention the Camaro or Firebird name for production, so everything was hush hush. Now, work on a 5th gen was started back in '95-96, but by '97 the plug was pulled and the design staff was pulled off, and they gave the F-bodies there last due.

Flash foward to late March of this year. The Ste.T plant was torn down and sold off. This plant was the "Berlin Wall", and its falling has brought a mass influx of info about an upcoming Chevy coupe. Now, this is very unusual to tear down such a new plant, and in '92, when production started on the 4th gens, it was one of the most high tech, high quality plants in the world.

Now, the only thing that stopped GM from saying Camaro is that the name was still tied up with the CAW. As of now, it seems that the Camaro name is now free of any obstructions...but things can happen in 3 years.

As of right now, there is a Chevy Coupe planned for production off the new Zeta chassis. Its up to GM and Chevy to call it Camaro. They could just scrap the whole Camaro name, and go with something else so that Purists and/or enthusiasts wont get upset when its not an exact image of what they thought it was gunna be.

I will post more news as I get it."

sounds promising. If the GM bigwigs have any brains, they'll resurrect the Camaro and make it just as, if not more badass than the 4th gen.

    That is the problem.

But seriously, the current rumor is it will be on the Zeta platform, RWD with the highest end model a 6.0L LS2 engine. It does sound promising. Let's hope GM can do something right for a change and make a badass car.

that article doesn't have a lot of facts straight. everyone keeps thinking that the Camaro is gonna be a retro-styled vehicle, when GM is doing exactly the opposite. If anything, it'll be an evolution of the 4th gen.

They will... but it'll end up being more expensive than the Corvette, so it'll get scrapped.

The only way the Camaro could come back is if it is affordable, and that ain't gonna happen.

It had been strongly hinted, and now confirmed, that GM was working on a sporty car for Chevrolet which includes a 5.3-liter V-8 engine, rear-wheel drive, and four-passenger capacity. This vehicle will be based on GM's upcoming "Zeta" chassis being developed by Holden, GM's Australian division. Production for Zeta is likely headed for GM's Hamtramck, Michigan plant, which will soon be phasing out Cadillac Deville, Seville and Buick LeSabre.

</font>[/QUOTE]True..., they will probably make something like the SSR, where its sort of cool but no one will buy it, it will flop and we are stuck with FWD pontiacs for performance.

From stuff I have read the Camaro's 2007 return is all but confirmed.

the St. Therese plant was the plant where the F-bodies were built since 1987. the CAW is the Canadian Auto Worker's group, i believe. GM had a BIG loan taken out to build the plant and have people work there...so the CAW got the rights to the names "Camaro" and "Firebird." that's why you never heard GM mention any return of the F-body, even though they've probably been hard at work on the new one.
