  • Thinking about a career in law enforcement...

As of late I've been a tad confused as to what career path to follow. I like computer graphics a lot, but I can't see myself trapped inside a building trying to come up with the next great commercial. So I've considered enlisting in the Border Patrol.

I feel this job..nah..CAREER would give me excitement and actually make me feel like I'm accomplishing something and doing something with my life, plus being in the Uniform sends a certain aura to everyone around you...that's just an extra. In order for me to accomplish this feat I have to get into better shape...this past job as general service in Express Tire made me lose some (emphasis on SOME) weight, so I figure I'm on the right track already.

The only thing (I feel) that is holding me back is my career history, especially one job in particular which is one that I had at UPS. See, because I only worked there for 1 week, I kid you not. Another one that's on my mind is this past job at Express Tire which I only held for a month. But I voluntarily quit these jobs, because they weren't what I was looking for. And I do know that the Border Patrol runs STRICT background investigations and it is a career that holds a promising future.

So I need help from people out there who know of or have experienced the steps needed to become a government agent in Law Enforcement. Whether it is Border Patrol or Peace Officers. Can you please answer these questions.

-Will my job history, affect my application process? i.e: Background Investigation

-Will I need to first enroll in the explorer program?

    -Where would I begin??

I actually have a cousin in the L.A Sheriff's Dept. but I haven't talked to him in a while since he's always busy and the same with my Godfather who is Fire Fighter. I want my career to be like that Busy and Non-Mundane. Any help would deffinately be appreciated...

damn illegal immigrants....taking jobs from out 15 and 16-year olds. my brother can't get a job because of them. plus they take up space, drive without insurance, and don't speak english.

i'm thinking about going into law enforcement as well, however i'd like to be a cop in a local town. not too much excitement (so i don't have to get into any SERIOUS trouble). good pay, and i can speed and not get in trouble! but seriously, law enforcement is a good choice. two of my cousins are cops in New York City, one is a narcotics officer, the other runs the Stolen Car dept. one of 'em just got married, his wife is a detective.

          i have a relative who's a cop so i know something about this. :D

yes, it will hurt you. it won't necessarily disqualify you, but you will have some 'splaining to do.

i don't think the border patrol has explorers. it is not crucial. in fact, it may do more harm than good. don't ask.

contact a recruiter and ask them these same questions.

are you in a hurry to sit in the rio grande and sweat all day? when you enter the border patrol, you will likely work a post in the deserts of texas. you need to be fluent in spanish as well. a lot of the border patrol test is in spanish.

i think you should stay in school, work with a smaller PD or SO and find out if you really like it first. border patrol would require you to take assignment anywhere in the US. the majority of those federal government jobs are generally consumed by officers with prior experience.

</font>[/QUOTE]Exactly what he said. Forign language a must, there will be an extensive background investigation (not sure if its as extensive as the FBI, like interviewing old neighbors and such), and lots of paperwork.

I thought about jumping into the Border Patrol (really, i wanted to do that), but getting basic PD experience jumped to the top of my list. Now i have no desire to do border patrol, id rather just do state.

Ok cool. Yeah I kind of figured it will hurt me, I will explain my history the best I can. I don't want to lie, only because I know it will come back ten fold. As far as speaking spanish no es problema considerando que yo soy Mexicano y hablo el español muy bien. :D Thanks for the help D.V and Ian, my next step will be to contact a recruiter and take it from there.

Thats good you decided on a career choice. I was gonna try and get onto the Houston pd but I got kind of tired forking over my hard earned money to a ****y college that made me take the same classes semester after semester after semester no matter how well I did in the class. So I said **** this and became an aprentence mechanic at a local dealership.
