  • looking to build new computer..

i havent been into the computer world for a long time.. since the abit nf7 first arrived and the 64 bit processors will still in alfa testing.

so here we go. I want to build a good GAMING computer. I already have a sweet 22inch monitor so thats out of the way.

im looking to spend about 500-600 bucks on the whole thing.

most likely looking to play hl, cs, hl2 blabla all the new good games.

    AMD processor
    Good reputable Motherboard
    at least 1gig of ram
120 gig hard drive 8mb buff.
i dont know if i should go PCI express of AGP
    cd rom drives blabla

Could you guys help me pick parts for these catagories.. or at least point out some good models and whatnot and i'll look into the reviews and whatnot.

Mobo i think should be abit or asus. i want good crisp speed and no lag.

it hink 500-600 bucks is plenty of money for a sweet gaming computer.

    Dude -

A new Athlon 64 processor is like $160+
Motherboard is going to b at least $100
    Case is like $40+
1GB of good memory is going to be $150+
    DVD+/-RW is like $80
Hard drive is around $90 or so
Gaming Video Card is like $150+ easy

you need more than $600 to build a "billy bad ***" computer. Just my .02, I happen to build these things aside from my regular job.

I go to computer shows for my parts. Tons of vendors in one auditorium trying to outsell each other. Wait until the end of the day - they hate to put inventory back into their trucks. You can find sweet deals.

Asus for the motherboard. Can't go wrong there.

I would think AGP for graphics because it is designed for high perf graphics. PCI express is for generic I/O. Probably not as good for graphics.

What is gained going 64 bit?

yea im biased towards both asus and abit boards.

not sure whats gained with 64 bit processor.. which is why im most likely not going to get one.. good thing is they have incredibly high fsb. what did i see, 2.2 ghz fsb? not too shabby. but im sure i'll be fine with 400 fsb.

computer shows.. yea thats how i got my sweet *** 22 inch monitor for 90 bucks..end of the day, thing weighed a ton. he didnt want to have to bring it back to his place . lol.

i havent read any reviews yet. but from what i hear pci express is actually faster now than agp x8.

i dont know. thats why im posting here.

I think I can help you out.

                Here http://newegg.com/
best deals you'll find anywhere. When my old video card crapped out I got my geforce 6600gt for $140 ($120 with the mail in rebate) shipping was $4 and they were selling the exact same card at the local stores for $230 with tax it would be like $250 so I got it for half the price. I couldn't be happier with it, let's me play all the newest games. It's a respected site and the customer service is great too, I would buy everything there if I found it sooner.

Also go here http://overclock.net/, you'll find all the info you'll need about what to buy.

Pci-e express is faster, twice as fast at 16x, but there aren't cards out yet that can use up all that much bandwith, but the newer cards are only pci-e so if your buying a motherboard make sure it has pcie not agp if youll want to play the newest games in the future.

Though honestly don't expect a great gaming computer for $500-600. Let's see if you could find a case, $100 for the mobo $100 for the memory get the 6600gt $130 decent cpu $200 and just that comes to $530 and you still need a hard drive, optical drive, 400w power supply and keyboard and mouse, I don't think you can pull off a gaming pc for $600. You would have to get compromise on the mobo and pc, because you cant go any cheaper on the video card.

cool thanks. i was thinking about going with the abit NF7-S2G motherboard. 400fsb with the amd athlon 2900+ (400 fsb)

board i can get for 80 bucks. processor around 110.

                  Corsair PC3200 DDR 1GB ram (2x512MB)- 70 bucks.

                  geforce 6600gt. 128mb. 130 bucks

serial ata 120gb hard drive. 70 bucks (western digital)

32x cd burner. 48x cd rom. (dont do much burning) 40 bucks

400W Mid Tower ATX Case about 40 bucks

                  so thats about 540 bucks.

those are estimated prices. could be less, im sure if i shop around. especially with the video card.

i think that'll do me good for quite some time.

any suggestions? let me know what ya'll think

6600gt is acctually faster then the 9800pro. It has much higer core and memory clocks then the 9800 pro and ddr3 memory, don't be fooled by the fact that it only has 128mb it beats the 9800pro in just about every benchmark especially newer games. And it supports newer technology like sli. If your going to spend $230 get a 6800gt.

You should stick with a 64bit processor. Not only are they the next technology (why upgrade to technology thats going to the way of the dodo bird)

The reason I say 64 bit, is because Vista (which is 64 bit)is going to be released this year. That means people are going to start to developing 64bit software. 64 bit runs 20% faster then 32 bit. Also my Athlon 64 is slightly faster then my Athlon XP and they both run at 2.2hz. And if you buy the processor+mobo combo I suggested, you'll be spending the same amount anyways.

                        Processor $148

As for video, I'm not really up on that end of computers.

But what I listed leaves you $125 so you might have to go over budget a little for a case and CDR drive.

He'll need a quality psu to power all that. Trust me a ****ty "430W" psu that comes with a $25 case isn't a good idea. 6600gts are kinda power hungry.

The motherboard you linked to is AGP by the way, I think he wanted a pci-e, you can go with agp if you want I have an agp 8x asus 6600gts come in either versions. I paid $140 for the mobo and I only got the AGP because my old mobo burned out too (which I suspect was the fault of the cheap psu that came with the case) and the only socket 478s I could find were AGP.

I bought a brand name 430W psu, it was $50 but well worth it. When I had my stock psu, and old ti4400 when I would play games the screen would sometimes go on and off even though the psu was rated at more then enough wattage. Cheap psus make dirty power.
