I would not recommend doing that, the difference would be so minimal.

Right, but make sure that you use white font. That way you can get away with it when printing. Also, Arial is wider but not really noticable. AND if you go to Format - Font you can expand the character spacing marginally. Throughout the years I found that by placing the paper in a cover jacket gives you the ability to change the left margin to 1.25" and get away with it.
            Every little bit helps.

This may sound like a wacky idea but, why not research the topic and worry about the content and what you're saying rater than how wide the font is. I've never found a case where I had to worry about the length of a reserach paper so long as I was actually concentrating on the paper.

But, if you must, try Lucida Sans. It has more spacing between letters than many other fonts. ;)

courier new is what I always used. I looks like times new roman but is way more spaced out. It made a 9.5 page, 12 pt font times new roman paper about 13 pages long

you dont think whoever is going to be reading this paper will recognize that you used a wide font? trust me most teachers would rather it be half a page short than you try and pull a quick one over on them, they'll catch it for sure, especially since they'll be reading one from every student, it'll stick out like a sore thumb

the teachers or professors only say you can use any font to see who is honest and loyal to the class.. My professor did that and i took advantage of it.. used 14 font with double spacing. lol.. he pulled me aside and made me put it to 12 font with regular spacing and made me redo it and add more information as if i were to actually try
