You jealous? Just kidding, I didn't know you were talking about AMD only. And the $1000 PC. I thought they meant $1000 and above. Oh well,

This is pretty much what my case looks like:

OMG you all paid way too much for your computers.

My friend just bought his computer on the internet this summer..we got it for..

$750

17" LCD monitor
3.0ghz Pentium 800 fsb
400watt glass side case
asus mobo (cant remember)
52x32x52 cd/rw
120gb seagate hd 8mb cache
radeon 9800 pro 256mb
512mb pc3200 ram

sigh, you people need to buy your computers online and just pirate linux or windows OS.

I'd never use a Unix based OS for my home machine, though I have been itching to play around with the various flavors of Linux I don't have a spare machine to do it on.
I think that unix (HP, Solaris, Irix) would not make a good desktop for the most part, BUT.... Mac vs. PC... with Mac having the core of those unix based systems... makes an excellent desktop operating system. More so then the core of XP. This is one reason Redhat, Suse and other linux got the popularity they did. Putting a front end on something that is open-sourced is what people want.... but most people are like sheep when it comes to MS....

EDIT: I would rather see people running Redhat or other flavor on good PC hardware (Dell, eMachine, Alien, etc) vs. loading the bloated MS stuff.. and being stuck at the mercy of Bill. Bill needs to open source more stuff to understand it.... but being the richest man... I don't think he will.. he'll just buy the GPL's of all open source software

It's not so much that I am part of the "herd" of sheep, but I just look at what's compatible with the hardware/software out there today.

Linux and MacOS X Panther are great Operating Systems. I actually own an Apple iBook and have come to a decision that the MacOS environment is better than the Windows environment. And not only because of the look and feel of the OS, but rather how much more powerful the OS is against the other. With MacOS X having UNIX functions, it makes the OS more powerful than Windows.

Unfortunately, most of the stuff out there is built for Windows. For example, I am a big gamer. Most of the good games out there are not available for other OS platforms. certain hardware is not compatible with other OS except Windows. So obviously I will be going with the OS that can support the hardware/software out there in the market place.

Now if you compare MacOS X vs. Windows in graphic design and animation, Apple's OS is hands-down better than Windows.
