Yes happens all the time. I think that Camaro has a more recognizeable name in most peoples mind. I used to constantly correct some of my friends/co-workers multiple times. Now I just let it slide. I know what they mean.

People make this mistake a lot. Hell, when I was younger and new to F-bodies I did too. Most people just think of Firebird and Trans Am as exchangeable, when they're not.
My car's been called a T/A sometimes, and the occasional person thinks it's a Formula.
only had a couple people that don't know anything about cars at all call mine a camaro. about 80% of people that talk to me about my car call it a trans am though. i let them think that.
I hate to say it, but from a distance, with slightly bad eyesight, camaro's occasionally look like Sebrings, but they look much better than them in real closeness ^_~

From a distance?
I was wierd seeing my camaro parked next to my mom's old 96 sebring convert.
i've only been called TRANS AMs
even by GM dealers... obviously they dont know their own product
but i guess with the body kit and dual exhaust its easy to make that mistake
I dont think anyone has ever called my car a firebird. In every refrence, it has been mostly camaro, and then trans am. Occasionally "Batmobile" by flaky chicks.
