I recommend you get a desktop for gaming. If you game as much as I do you'll put up with a desktop and for a budget of $1500 you can build yourself a nice setup. If you are looking for a laptop I cannot help you there as I don't fancy them. But desktops on the otherhand I'd be glad to help you out with.

build the system for about 1200 bucks.. just the case, mobo, memory, hard drive, and video card... then go to your local computer show.. and pick up a used 22inch viewsonic crt monitor for 100 bucks.. lol thats what i did.

u can get amazing deals at computer shows

You should build your self a desktop like they said for gaming. Laptops you will spend all that money and in a year or so it will be out of date and laptops for the most part aren't too updateable. What is the exact reason for wanting a laptop for gaming anyway?

I got my dell for $1500 about 8 months ago, it's a inspirion 5150. Pentium 4, 320GHZ, and 520MB of RAM. And some upgraded video card. I mainly use mine for work, but wanted to be able to play occasional games.
The 5150 is cheaper than $1500 I added memory and stuff, to bring it up to $1500. Call dell or go to dell.com they will help you build a laptop with whatever you want in it, and then even put you on payments if you don't have $1500 laying around.

            laptops != gaming

You could build or buy a great gaming computer for $1500

Look into Falcon Northwest or Alienware if you want the best of both worlds. Be aware that most likely they are going to be "Desktop Replacements" more than super-portable and slim laptops, however. Look into those two companies first.

I would never, ever buy an alienware. You can build a laptop that runs just as good through dell if you really want to game on one. Its like buying a Benz, or the Hundai that looks like the Benz. Pretty much the same car but one is a hellovalot cheaper. I priced an "alienware" at a computer show and it wound up to be far cheaper. If you want to get one of those then get your headlight fluid refilled, muffler bearings replaced, buy some A1-R, get me a bucket of steam, and don't forget the lefthanded skyhook. [/rant]

By the way you don't seem to be an FPS junkie from what I've gathered and to be blunt you don't know too much about computers either. Thats okay though, don't let anyone back you into a corner and tell you that you HAVE to have something, normally they're trying to make money out of it or make you look like a retarded "computer ricer". If the box it comes in looks pretty it doesn't mean its the best for the $$. You don't sound like your first language is english either.. and if you need a laptop, not a "labtop" for college class, not clase. More power to you. Ask questions and you'll get answers, together this board knows a lot of things, but they cannot be acessed unless you can ask the right question or we can think the same way.

My philosopy is have a nice Desktop machine that is updateable, fast all that good stuff. And a laptop for the everyday little stuff.

I also have a laptop, but its a older model with a nice sized screen with a wifi card.

Its great for surfing the web from the couch, or at school. Writing papers, and streaming music over the wifi network off my Desktop. Its not the fastest most powerful laptop out there by far. But I don't need it to be. I got my desktop for that.

No, you don't. You just think you do.

I thought that way too, and in 3 years I've only brought my "desktop replacement" notebook to a few of my CS classes.

They're not all that good for note-taking, especially when if you can't type well or you're taking a course that involves sketching diagrams into your notes (like almost all art, math, and science courses.)

So other than that there's not much you can do with them in class but play games and surf the internet (if they have wireless access,) and, frankly, if your doing those things in class you wouldn't last long in college.

If you really still want a laptop then I would drop that gaming requirement.

I agree with what you're saying (Ailenware=overpriced and overhyped), but I don't think this guy's gonna go through the effort of selecting and assembling the components for a better/cheaper system like some of us would. I'm not going to sit here and wax poetic about a subject most people don't care to hear about, nor are going to pursue.

I build all my systems (my next laptop will be sourced and built by me, now that my father has started opening up his business to custom laptops as well) and will never buy a big-name manufacturer's system ever again. Most people don't care to do it themselves, and that's fine. That's the answer I gave and I'll still stick with it. ;)
