  • My new job sucks

Yeah, I started work at Mettler Toledo today. I got it through this pre-engineering program at OSU. They didn't tell me what I was doing or what I was going to get paid at MT before I started, so until this morning it was a mystery. I thought that I'd get to do some cool stuff with engineers and get paid a lot, because the people at OSU said the pay is usually "very compeditive." My buddies who got a job at IBM are getting 15 bucks an hour to start, which is damn nice for high school graduates.

Well I get there this morning and found out that my job for the next 5 weeks is to reorganize and compare files that have been on their server for a few years. Yeah, I get to do the work that no one else wants to do. They told me to sort two directories, which didn't seem so bad. I get in there and there were hundreds of folders in there, with each one having at least 10 inside them. I see the properties and there are 3000+ folders and 13,000+ files between the two.

I also am getting paid 9 bucks an hour, which isn't bad, but I got paid more at my old job and had more perks (the owner bought us lunch often, lots of free overtime for working on-site computer setup, really awesome supervisor, etc). We also got to listen to music while working, a few of my buddies work there, and I'm a senior technician so I get to boss around the newbie workers too. It's a really good atmosphere at my old job, I loved it a lot.

At MT, I sit in a cubicle with a 4 year old Compaq PC. It's about 4 feet wide and 6 feet long, and it sucks. The only noises are the whirring from my PC's ancient 4 gig hard drive and the random coughs and hacks from my co-workers, all of whom are at least 30 years older than me. My other friend from OSU got a job there too and he hates it as well. If it doesn't get better by Wednesday I'm going to quit and go back to my old job. Screw OSU and their summer internship, if I have to committ vehicular homicide just to stay sane then the job isn't worth it.

9 an hour for an internship isnt too bad dude. i had an internship last summer that paid 7 an hour, and only a 28 hour week. it blew.

i had to give up my painting job, which was paying me 18 an hour under the table. i gave up like 6 grand to take that crappy internship.

so you dont have it THAAAAAAAAt bad, but it still sucks.....

Yeah, I watched Office Space once I got back from work lol.

I'm gonna stick it out for a week, and if it doesn't get better I'm going to ask for real, non b**** work. If they tell me no I'll go back to my old job. I just don't want it to look bad thatI quit my internship.

I think its called "paying your dues".

I wish I had an internship before I went to OSU.

just write a script that does all that for you... maybe take an hour to write the script, and it'd do all that in a second.
