I had this problem a while ago with my laptop. The network card just like died or something rather. It wasn't any of the cat5 or the router/gateway. i sent it into the shop under warrenty, they replaced the mobo and i just got it back. it works at 100mbps.
So, todya, i get home. the network lost power and my laptop has now got the same problem. but i set it at 10mbps. and it works.... but it wont work on Autodetect. I have other settings like 100baseTX and a few others, but TX and T and Dual are different. is there any way to get this pos working like it did again? I have a 3.2ghz Intel HT Pentium, and Windows Xp Pro sp1. ty in advance

could possibly be a wrong driver for the NIC. what cable are you useing? full duplex or half duplex?

Sounds more like a network problem. Look into the router or hub that you are using. Those things are cheap to replace.

Also try connecting directly to your high speed modem directly and pull those network items out.

It could just be flaky gear. I've seen issues with router not liking other gear and locking itself down to 10Mbs.

it could also be the media.. i'm 100 mbps.. my cable got kinked and i guess damaged one or two of the wires in the UTP and would no longer run at full duplex. it can be a lot of variables causing the issue.

Steve, where do you get your knowledge? what school/degree?

oh no, all my cables and stuff are fine. Its just my laptop is the one refusing to go on to 10BaseT, every other computer is on 100BaseT. I'm just not understanding it. All my cables work and the router and like everything is like. I even changed all the cables. 10BaseT is sloowww and POS and is barely working x.x. Steve what are you talking about with the gears? Thanks

                Michael

edit, i have a BEFSR41 linksys router/gateway and it supports 10/100 and full duplex, so i dont understand wtf is wrong.

Even with todays progress, I find that not all network devices like each other. Who made the network card in the laptop?? n which ones are you using in the other computers. If they arnt cards, you should still know who made the chip set.

They could not like each other and are frying out the laptops 100 side.

This just happened to me the other day. Couldn't find my spare matching network card. [I buy matching brands when I need them.] stuck in an off brand spare I had. Booted the computer. and my NTLDR was gone. spent the rest of the day recovering my system. Then dug n found my matching spare card n no problems.

i had a very similar problem with a NIC card a couple years ago..turned out to be the driver..well basically...a couple small files that were associated with the driver would not work with the OS (even though it was supposed to)

**** like this could also be related to spyware infestations..

I believe when steve mentioned gear.. he was talking about hardware.. as in gear.. like traveling gear. lol.. best i can describe it..

log onto your manufacturers website and look for any updates to your MOBO or computer. be careful with that though. I still think its an improper or "basic" driver for a network card. but thats just me.

eh, I have a SiS 900-Based PCI Fast Ethernet on Board Adapter and I have a BEFSR41 Linksys Router/Gateway. They have been hooked up for at least 8 months. And just of late they have been acting up. This is a brand new MObo. The drivers are the ones that came with the Mobo from the factory. There is no reason for this to not work. Lol, it's driving me insane that I cannot figure out what is wrong. I think I might just burn the place down...

Yes, gear meaning hardware. I got my knowledge from just doing it. It's the best way I learn.

Shock.. I would look into changing the NIC to something more modern and known. When you changed out MOBO's that could have been the problem. The Linksys is pretty forgiving most of the time.. but NIC's are not. I can't remember (brain fart) what NIC's I used to use with the PC desktops. With wireless now... I'm use to Linksys/Apple product. Both work well together.

upgrade the firmware on your router...I too had this problem, im running on a d-link though, my router didnt like my modem all of a sudden and it locked everything down to 10mbps, and the wireless laptops couldnt even log on, it worked for me.
