Whats are your thoughts on these cars now? I personally despise them. They fugly as **** to me. The Impala is just dreadful looking to me. I actully to like the Malibu SS and would consider purchasing one. The Cobalt SS isnt too bad either. 5 Speed only option ROCKS! Seems like everything has an "SS" option now :D
The Cobalt SS just makes me angry because the SS option is mainly an apperance and handling package. You do get a whopping .2 liter (26hp) bump in engine displacement, but if you want the supercharger thats another $3000 option on top of the SS option. For the longest time I thought all the cobalt SS's were packing a supercharger, goes to show how GM is cheapening the SS badge.
Wach out, an Aveo SS will probably be next!
I don't understand what you guys expect? Is anyone else with me when I say GM is doing the same thing they always have. Impala's and Monte Carlo's, when were they ever a big deal in the first place? They always looked exactly like regular family cars of their era with mediocre performance, no? SS is just a "high end" package. It doesn't mean, "big rwd V8 that will smoke every other car on the road!!111!!!1."
But GM conditioned us to think "SS" is the top big V8 RWD with the Camaro, Chevelle, Impala (94-96), Nova, Monte Carlo (81-88) even the SSR.. Making the change from those to 4 cylinder ecotec's and 6 cylinder SS's throws us in to a little bit of confusion.
I suppose I understand that, but a V8 was either standard or an option in all those vehicles you mentioned without it being an SS. So the SS was just an upgrade to the standard engine or a bit bigger in displacement and nothing to do with the drivetrain. Isn't that exactly what the SS is now? I mean, if people complained like you guys back in the 70's and early 80's, they would be arguing SS's should have V10's over the standard engines.
Times have changed. Its good that we aren't all still driving big gas guzzling inefficient V8's (of the past) and can match that performance of the past (mostly do better) with a 6 or 4 banger. Instead, we all drive gas guzzling SUV's! lol.
i gotta agree with v8. i think when most of us consider the two letter "ss" most of us envision hugh powerful engines, muscle cars, and roasting tires. i personally think gm is just trying to please two many audiences. they seems liek they are going into the tunenr market with the colbalt, and i think its a good car for that gnere but it doesnt really fulfill that vision of ss. also the new impala and monte now have v8's which is a plus but fwd. they shold have given the monte rwd imo but thats just me. in my oppion the one american company thats seems like they are really making "ss" like stuff is dodge/chrysler. their SRT line is better then gm/s current SS line. the dodge SRT v-10 agaisnt the silverado SS with a regualr v-8 big stanard rims a chrome tip exhasut and some body flar really doenst compare. chryler 300 stomps the imapala and with a 6.1L option their is no competion. even the neon SRT seems more aggresive then the colbalt SS. GM's problems is they try to please everone with bearly taking risks. i mean look at the ssr and hhr. both retro cars now that the real retro phase is out. and i dont know about you but i dont have 40 or 50k to buy a truck i cant do anything with unlike t he dodge srt. thats jusy my oppion on gm.

You guys are impossible to please. You cry because GM made killed performance of 'family cars' with ball-less FWD.
GM answered with the GTO.
Then you complain the GTO looks too much like a grand prix and is ugly. We'll just kind of ingore the fact the original GTO looked like a grand prix for now.
You cried because GM isn't keeping up in the sports compact market.
GM answered with the Cobalt SS. Forget the fact that it pretty much destroys every car in its class in handling RSX-S, Civic SI, Celica GTS, SRT4. It's only bested in speed by the SRT4, remember. Not to mention the interior just looks awesome, HUGE step up from GM interiors from the past.
You complain, well it doesn't beat the SRT4, so it's not good enough.
GM introduces the new Monty Carlo in response to complaints about the lack of performance in sedans, So they dropped a 300 HP V8.
But, but, its still FWD and it's so ugly.
GM why is the corvette so expensive? You need to make an affordable 2 seater sports car, like the S2000 or the miata.
GM answered with the Sky and the Solstice.
You go, but the Solstice is soooo ugly.
Nothin GM does will please you guys.

rwd v8 sports car with a manual tranny for less then $25k...
Got was good, I'd love to own one but $35k?
IMo all htese sport sedans would be cool if they were RWD.

The new Monte Carlos and Impala are nothing compared to the 81-88 Monte SS's and the 94-96 Impala's. The new GTO is nothing compared to the OLD GTO. Their half assing everything. GTO, gigantic V8, Bleak looking car. Monte and Impala, now has V8, FWD V8 that is  .... Cobalt and Ion Redline, did we ever even ask for tuner competitors?
I have no complaints about the Solstice and Sky. Why can Ford please Mustang lovers but GM cant please us?

The current 3800 N/A Monte's will beat their 1980's V8 counterparts stock for stock. The supercharged SS wouldn't even be a race.
The supercharged Impala is only a hair slower than the mid 90's LT1 Impalas
The new GTO utterly decimates it's 60's counterpart in handling and in the 1/4. I mean ****, my slow *** 4 banger would give a stock old GTO a good run for it's money. And in my personal opinion, the old GTOs are *** ugly.
Besides, what about the sigma or whatever platform that wasn't cancelled, is going to be a RWD platform. GMs current line is 100x better then 5 years ago. 5 Years ago, the only performance car's GM offered were the Fbodies, GTPs and the Vettes.
Atleast now we have a 400 HP GTO, 300 HP Monte Carlo, 260 HP GPGTP, 200 HP Soltice, Sky and Cobalt SS.

My point is, GM could bring back all their old 'muscle cars' exactly as they were in their day, and people would still ***** about it.
