I personally don't like Dell, but that's because that's all the Air Force ever buys. You should have seen our bay at work earlier this year- it looked like a Dell warehouse. We had 500+ computers, 250+ monitors, servers, plasma displays, 65"+ tvs, projectors, color laser printers, the works. I hate those boxes with the blue E on them now! But, they are decent computers for what you pay, and the tech support is pretty good. I don't see how you can make a pc-compatible computer proprietary though. Does it use AGP? PCI? DDR-RAM? IDE or SATA? you don't need to buy Dell products to update any of that. And you don't need a Dell monitor to work with your new systm. It's just that most of their systems have DVi interfaces now, so a lot of CRTs don't directly plug into it.
Another option for a cheap computer would be pricewatch- they have a link for pre-built computers with OS; this is quoted from Pricewatch for one of the systems,
"Complete sys - AMD Athlon XP 3200 400 FSB Win CD COA - 128Mb 20Gb HDD Video 52X CD USB 2.0 Front USB Mid"- $200. Check them out, there's some good prices
My Gateway has given me no problems. I was able to customize it and bargain about the software I didn't want included. It was a pleasant experience and I was able to finance it.
They sent me a wired kb & mouse instead of the wireless ones I asked for on my order. Needless to say, they had the new ones to me the next day and I was able to keep the ones they sent on accident.
I'll go Gateway from now on after the great experience I had. The online support based on your order is top-notched. Whoever programmed it is a genius.

HP isn't too bad, as well.
Dell is the same way if you order it normally and not too badly priced. But formt he looks this guy is looking for a pretty basic system.
As for these systesm I can honestly say I think its getting kinda hard to build a computer for less then the cost of a new one. And if you want to get into legalities, isn't xp Pro like $200 right off that bat?
As for useability and such, I think dells are pretty easy to work on, the cases are cool how they hinge open and all the hardware is on slots that you can pull out and use, much easeir then any old style comptuer I had to use.
Oh, just so you know, Gateway matched Dell's price for me and then lowered it $50. Don't forget to mention about other companies you were considering. They will go down in their price.
My Gateway wasn't over-priced...not sure where you heard that from.
