• guitar is hard!! :(

I want to learn to play guitar so i bought just a cheap 130 dollar guitar from walmart and cheap 60 dollar amp just to learn on, that way if i find i dont like it, or suck at it i'm not out that much money. But anyway ITS FUGGIN HARD!!!I know how to read tabs but the HARD part is PLAYING... you have to have all nimbly bimbly like fingers and wow...its hard i cant even get my hand to stretch to make this chord

|------5-------|
|------3-------|

8=pinky finger on 8th fret
0=leave open, but strike the string
5=middle finger on 5th fret
3's=index finger over both on 3rd fret

Work on making your fingers flexible. It helps.

its actually pretty easy once you do it for a while. a few months from now you will notice a big change and will probably be able to play most nirvana songs (a good place to start). i started on bass and am now working on my acoustic. Its very satisfying when you finally get the hang of it.

i've been through countless guitars..never bothered with tabs..all done by ear :D ..but i started in the 6th grade and am now 24..i've been in several albany punk/hardcore bands over the years..put out a couple CDs out there somewhere..first..i would take a look at..THE GUITAR..some guitars have the strings VERY close to the fret board..while this is great for advanced leaders doing lots of solos..it makes it difficult to learn on..you may want to space them farther away..second..i always strung my guitar with electric/acoustic strings..plain electric strings are pretty thin, harder to tune, and break too easily IMO..third..i'd start out on a medium pick (not thin or thick) ..this will give you the ability to adjust either way in the future since you are used to the medium..finally..like T-Punk said..nirvana is a very good band to learn on because most of their stuff is just power chords..after them i think i moved on to rage against the machine..their funky riffs and repetition make it both fun and easier to learn..from there i moved on to more complex stuff like Tool and some underground hardcore/punk bands..and STICK WITH IT..if you want to learn dont give up..the guitar is a great instrument for a great time..i've had many a bras thrown at me due to this great creation lol ..and by turning up something angry and heavy it can be a great way to blow off some steam..good luck

In middle school, I got put in a music class, 2nd day into it the vice principle came in and asked if anyone wanted to switch to a computer science class I volunteered and got out.

took one art class, 2 home ec classes and 4 PE classes in middle school. I prefered computers/sciences and atheletics

I've been playing guitar for a little over 10 years.
It get's easier, but the key word here is 'Practice'

Practice, practice, practice.

You'll get there.

Just remember, PERFECT practice makes perfect. Keep making the shape until you can hit each string and get a clear sound, then repeat that perfect shape until it becomes second nature.

I'd also suggest getting lessons for a few months. Having an experienced instructor for just a few months will make you improve at a high rate compared to on your own learning.

both ;) haha..anyways..a good music shop should have plenty of tab books..anything from twinkle little star to any modern bands ..and actually i'd also recommend doing a little improvisation (improv) ..learn a blues scale..get a tempo in your head..and use only the notes in that scale..after a couple days of practicing that you can go for a long time and sound like you're just rockin out some big long solo..which i guess technically you are

Maybe get some kind of teach yourself guitar book. I got one about the same time I got my guitar. I remember trying to play some tab and not being able to get the fingerings, but after going through the book found the easy way to finger the chord. Not sure if that makes sense, but I'm sure anyone who's played guitar here knows what I'm trying to say.

Also, I agree with the above posts, look into lessons. I got the guitar and started lessons that same week this past summer (durring break). I practiced until my fingers hurt every day (first day was ~30 min, by the end, over an hour a day). I know that without my teacher, I'd probably have gotten discouraged and quit.

If you're devoted and really want to do this and be good, you'll make time for practice. It's very fun and I'm sure you'll enjoy it (just don't expect to play like Hendrix overnight ).
