How do you get a 440V hook up for large air compressors and what not? I'm looking into buying a big air compressor at my new house since it has a 4 car detached garage out back. How can I get 440 hooked up?

4x120v, same way you get 220v for dryers and such. just add em together. and what the hell do you need a compressor of that size, Ive never seen anything over 220v for a compressor. get one with a large enough tank that you dont need the high output motor to keep recharging the tank.

440V?
thats pretty crazy...
As for hook up, find out what kind of panel you have, then find a Breaker that will fit it. Not sure if Home depot/lowes will carry it, check an electrician's supply store.
You just bolt it/plug in(depending on your box) and hook up the wires and run wires capable of handling it to the unit. Honestly what kind of compressor needs 440 volt? Most "home" units run 120, I guess I could see a 220, but 440? Bit excessive.
Actually since its your home, and if you don't have any expereince adding a circuit to your breaker box, call an electrician, probably be worth your money in just finding a inexpensive 440V breaker for your box, then to hook it up right and not burn our place down.-Eric
2000 NBM V6 Camaro 5-speed T-top converted
14.467@95.45mph $0 in mods
The member formerly known as MustangEater8251

Honestly getting a hookup like that at a residential address would be very expensive. If the compressor only draws 4.5 amps or less you might be able to find a 2000 watt transformer that will take 220 in and output 440 for $100-200.

440 VAC is a three phase setup. Unless you live in an industrial park, it won't happen. Just get a 220 VAC, 2 phase air compressor, it will be plenty big.2001 Firebird 3.8L V6 M5,
It once had....
NX Nitrous Wet Kit, ZZP X-P Hot Cam,
3.42 LSD, Pacesetter Headers,
36# Injectors, HP Tuners
322 RWHP, 379 RWTQ
13.596 @ 102.56 w/100 shot

Thanks guys, its not my house yet, its something we have to consider if we move into this new house. The garage isn't finished so I basicly have the say as what goes out there since it will be mine home for the most part. I'm thinking of getting 2 lifts but I'm pretty sure they'll use 220V and I thought for some reason that all big Air Compressors ran 440. The lifts that we have run 110 and our compressor is a 220 with a 50 gallon tank and it is plenty for our shop.2002 M5 Bright Metallic Silver
*Fully loaded and modded

2005 GSXR 750
*Micron Serpent Race Exhaust *K&N Filter *Power Commander *Trying to hit 200 MPH!

1970 SS 454 Chevelle Cortez Silver
*It can pass anything but a gas station

Yeah arthansen is correct, you won't be able to get that voltage or 3 phase in a house, its a big safty risk, But I sure would love to have it. Home depot has a few large 220v compressors that run on close to 50amps, that should be plenty for what you want to do.255/50R16 Tires, Pioneer Deck, Pioneer 4 Way speakers, PPI Amps, JL subs, Spec Stage 3 Clutch, Optima Yellow Top
