The "cool sound" I want is the exhaust system I have planned for next year for throttle only. I guess it would sound cool arriving at a car meet and people turn around to see who's arriving next as you downshift to engine brake lol. I'd much rather have them watch me take off and squint from the loudness.
Would it harm the engine? I'm not sure but the notion of oil being pumped upwards past the piston would concern me if I had gapless piston rings for true compression sealing in each cylinder.
I have an M5 and I would rather be using brakes than using my clutch for the no brainer costs related to the practice.

Originally posted by loser: im confused about everything now. can someone quickly explain to me what rev matching and double clutching is exactly. i have a M5. but i cant legally drive yet, if i can learn stuff now it'd be great.
edit: also, is neutral between 1 and 2? or 3 and 4? my dad said i should leave the car in gear when i shut it off anyway. but im just wondering. again, sorry for the stupid questions, but im new to this stuff and dont want to break anything.
Rev matching is when you push the clutch in and give the throttle some gas before you down shift. That way the revs are higher and 'match' when you go into the lower gear.
Double clutching is when you press the clutch in, take the shifter out of gear and put it in neutral, let the clutch out, push the clutch back in, and put the shifter in a higher gear. Please don't think about what fast and the furious says, because there is NO way anyone would double clutch during a race.
In the old days, double clutching was used to syncronize the gears in the transmission. Today, we have syncros that do that job, so double clutching is pretty much useless.
To answer your question about neutral. It's between all the gears. In a 5 speed, first is all the way to the left and up. Second is all the way to the left and down. Between 1st and 2nd, that's neutral. If you were to let go of the stick when its in neutral in the far left position, it would spring back to the center position, between 3rd and 4th gear. 3rd and 4th is in the center, and neutral is between those. 5th and reverse is on the far right, and neutral is between those. If you let go of the shifter, it would spring back to the center position, between 3rd and 4th gear.
As far as leaving the car in gear when your parked, I personally don't do it, I use my parking brake. When you leave it in gear, it puts extra strain on the transmission. Will it hurt the tranny, probably no more then my speed shifting and it probably doesnt matter.
It is however safer to leave it out of gear when you park, if you forget the car is in gear and let the clutch out after you start it, the car will jump forward, or backwards depending on the gear. That could get ugly.

Its funny, I was test driving an RX-8, and the salesman was like, so, you a fast driver? Can you double clutch and all that good stuff??? I just laughed and said, no. And I absolutley agree that double clutching is kind of useless. If anything it saves wear and tear on the synchros but, I wanted to see if I could get the lever to slide in to gear with ease as they say.

I have to disagree there though. Only because when I was 16, new driver, took my fathers 5 spd truck out to learn on by myself. I came back, parked it on a hill, and pulled the e-brake, left it in nuetral. Needless to say, I had to run back out of the house attempting to chase it down the hill. It stopped though. After slamming into someones car a 100 feet down the street. I don't trust just the e-brake.
So to leave the strain off your transmission, set it in nuetral, pull the ebrake, then throw it back in first and turn the tires. Then its there as a secondary precaution.
They must have fixed it already because I don't see anything unusual? Thats what HowStuffWorks said though. If you put something in there unrelated or stupid, they'll catch it and take it out. I'd still be weary.
Few steps behind? Time to play catch up! You can grab an 04 goat for a decent price im sure. Its because no one knows what they are missing. I say this everytime but its true. I really didn't like GTO's at all, then I test drove it, changed my mind completley.
And all that crap is the result of working since I was 15, then busting my *** to get high paying summer jobs. The GTO was a gift to myself for busting my *** through college and landing a decent job. :D

Besides, that's why you turn the wheel to the curb when you park on a grade ;)
