When I watched the movie, I was baffled they said that. Took me forever to convince my 18 yr old sister the movie was full of cow chips.
I "engine brake" when something goes wrong and the brakes won't stop the car in time. I've needed this a few times in life, which is one of the reasons I only drive stick. I prefer the engine to help me stop than continue to push me forward.
Engine braking will not use more fuel. The verdict is out on the effect of the engine.
