GPS devices rock

I picked up a new toy for my wife (so she stops calling me asking for directions for her work).

It's a Magellen Roadmate 300. I have to say, this is one of the coolest things ever. It's like something right out of star trek. I set the destination, through a touch screen, and tell it to route. Then it tells me when I'm approaching the turn, yes it talks, and if I go off route, it plans a new route instantly.

When you're coming up to the turn, it switches to a overhead map/3D map split screen showing the actual turn from my POV.

Then when you arrive at your destination, it actually tells you what side of the road it's on. Something that has been lacking in all of the mapping programs I've used.


I just noticed I get a free 256 meg SD card from magellan with my map region preloaded [img]graemlins/rock.gif[/img]

Yes my dad has a higher-end magellan for his Avalanch, comes in mighty handy on cross country road-trips, he also had one built into his Murano. Every once in a while, it gets confused when they're doing road construction but will find the next closest route after you drive a few miles

Yea, my buddy just bought a GPS deck for his car. Them things are awesome. You can search in it like its the yellow pages. It has phone numbers, addreses, everything. We looked up dealerships within a 25 mile radius right from his car. You choose a destination and it does exactly what yours does, and its just awesome how they even show mall parking lots and roads. I want one. :( I don't want to spend 2500 bucks though.

I'm asking Santa for one this year because I want to be able to GPS all the mountain trails I run around here.

I think I have the 700 model, same thing only mine has the hard drive in it...I use it every day for all my home inspections....and by far its one of the easiest to use units out there....how much was yours????

awesome they sound cool alwasy a tow i kinda half want, but jsut cannot jump on it I woudl nto use it enough. Now if I remotely travelesd a bit I might be fore it.

I've always wanted one, but they're just too much money because I didn't travel. Since Jenn is driving all over the state now, I figured it would be a good investment.

When you’re out there in the hills, with all those trees, just remember when you throw that thing because you are no longer able to transform from an EFC Geocentric Position to a Orthometric position because there is no point solution available.

If you have less >3 satellites, and they are at >12* on the horizon, your receiver is unable to complete the 3 Dimensional Coordinate Transformation Solution. Trees and what not will also allow this to happen - What then….

Can you say Owned by the little black box? To many people are way to dependent upon GPS, and know nothing about it.

On a side note, they just launched another satellite into orbit so that they can transmit another band for greater positional accuracy, “L5”. Being that we can only use the CA & P code, Uncle Sam has the P & W code locked down with currently unknown algorithms, we should sooner than later be able to get a lot greater positional accuracy. It will take some time, but it’s on the way guys and gals.

1o bonus cool points if you can tell me the “Zero Hour” for GPS. No checking Google!
