hey i just posted this on s10 forum but i was wondering if may be you guys knew the answer?

help the new guy with a blowing up 4.3

hey guys. im posting for my cousin. he has a 1991 s10 blazer. automatic. unmodded. alot of miles. at some point the 4.3 blew a rod(no oil) so the motor was rebuilt and put in. ever since then it hasnt realy run right. the only way i can explain it is that it like turns off for a split second while driving. kinda like you had a misfire but ALOT worse. the plugs and wires and filters have been changed repeatedly. well a supposedly arcing plug wire caugt fire to this lucky vehicle and it burned for a smile while. a few hoses and wires later it was back on the road. now the cutting out has gotten even worse. that fire was about 8 months ago but like 3 months ago it stareted to get worse. and in the last few days its started turning off when it cuts out some of the time. it always use to dies at a stop but now it does when driving. also his check engine light comes on randomly and his temp gauge goes from bottom to top randomly which makes his check guages light come on. does anyone know what could be doing this? any ideas? p.s. we pulled a plug just the other day and took it to shucks. the man said it wasnt running rich or lean. but the spark plug was a reddish color and he said that it was running way too hot. he checked the numbers and told us it was the right heat range for the motor.????????????????????????????????????????????

Check the engine timing. I would change the cap and rotor.

Yes. When I had an engine rebuilt a couple of years ago the timing on my truck was way off. Since I don't have a Tach. and my truck engine is quiet, I was running 1200 at idle.

I didn't find out about it till the smog tech. told me about it.

cap and rotor? ****, sounds like it needs a completely new distributor --- I just fixed that problem on another S-10. First did cap/rotor/plugs/wires and tested the entire system.. Nothing came up wrong.. Drove fine but problem came back.. Replace distributor, drives like a damn champ!

What motor is in it? 4.3 TBI or CPI?

in other words, does it look fuel injected or carb'd?

hey its a 4.3 and it looks fuel injected. the distributor at shucks auto is 130 bucks. i dont know that he will put it in as he is trading the blazer in on a 96 camaro. they offered him 5-700 bucks so i dont think he will want to spend 150 to see if it will fix the problem. thanks for your help kbeezy.
