  • another person thinking of building a computer

I just have one problem, I havent been into computers that much in about 2 years when I put my last one together. I need your guys help. I already have a cd burner, hard drive, and sound card I will carry over but this stuff I am looking at is so out of this world I have no clue where to start anymore. I know the basics of what I need. can I get some ideas on what would be good?

I am probibly going to go with the AMD Athlon 64 processor
need a board to put it in
and a decient case to put the board in
    power supply
going to start with 1GB of ram
really leaning to the NVIDIA GeForce 6800 GT
because of the heat that video card will put out I am also considering a water cooled kit. did I not see a link for an internal water system here a few months ago?
need at least a 80 GB hard drive to add to the other one.

umm I am sure I left a few thing out but I thin that'll get me started

I would research the motherboard and powersupply before purhasing. Look up www.newegg.com and see if they have each type of component, and see if anyone's complaining about incompatibility issues with either one. I know the AMD's require a good power supply, and I think they have a list of "approved" PS units that have met AMD's testing criteria.

Here's a link to AMD's system building guide, and you can use that to see if the listed components are going to be up to snuff:
                http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/...2_9339,00.html

I know my system is working flawlessly (USB Header issue aside) and Here is the components. I'm at work right now and supposed to be on patrol (snicker, hehe) but I'm relieving a Desk Sergeant for chow, so I'm short on time. I'll revisit this thread when more time is available.

I just bought an anthlon 64 2800+ bundle - it's $180+ bucks, insanely fast, overclocked to 2.25, with little larger heatsink, 54C @ full load, not bad. Theoretically you can get it up to 2.5ghz, but you have to bump the voltage.

                          Water Cooling Kit
                          More info on the kit
This is the kit that I was looking into for my computer. It was rated pretty high, it's internal, and quite easy to setup. Plus it comes with everything you need to run, including the CPU and VPU cooling blocks, I believe two radiators, and a nice looking panel/interface. It comes with the adaptors to attach it to almost any current processor also

So any word on which way you're going for your system? As for overclocking, I haven't done it since I purchased my old Intel Celeron 300A processor back in '98... I'm a bit rusty on overclocking [oldgeez]since back in my day *coughwheeze* we didn't have any of these newfangled "water cooling" thingamabobs! Ya whippersnappers![/oldgeeze] :D

that bare bones kit, w/an extra 512meg ram, 17" lcd monitor is less than $500 after rebates.

time for a replacement for my trusty 400mhz PII ;)
