  • Need suggestions for a beater car... (UPDATED - Car Bought!!)

Well, I've been adding a lot of miles to my F-Body since my job requires me to travle a lot. I finally decided to give my `maro a rest and buy a beater car. The car I have in mind is a 95 Honda Prelude SI with 133,000 miles for $4999. How realiable are these cars at this mileage? I'm looking at this car since it's a less of a gas gusler than my Camaro, and wouldn't mind f-ing up a Honda.

Are parts expensive for this model year Prelude if any work needs to be done or in case the car breaks down? Any suggestions would be appreaciated...

I would think at the kind of mileage you wouldn't want to get that car. If it was an American made car, thats a whole different story.

The ONLY reason why I didn't mention a Neon is because I was told they are not reliable cars. I was looking at a 2001 Neon with only 45k miles for $8000, but didn't take the effort to look at it because a lot of people I've met have told me the engines are not so good. If I've been getting the wrong info, please let me know because it has a lot less mileage than the prelude...

Dont quite follow you, saying that Hondas are less reliable than domestic cars?

A high-rev "perfomance" engine-type Honda is not the way to go for fuel economy. Edmunds says the Prelude Si gets 22 MPG. That's worse than my bird.

I had my neon for about 6 years, with almost 100K miles on it. It was a 2000 ES with MTX. No problems what so ever. The newer Neons require a timing belt change at around the 100K mark, which is one of the reasons I traded it in for the GTP.

Reliability and mileage were dead-on perfect. Routinely on cross-country trips I'd see 40+ MPG. Only time I had a problem with the car is when a rodent chewed through an engine wiring harness. Other than that, stay up on the maintenance and it'll serve you well for quite a long time. ;)

.... If you want a Honda, be sure to ask if its maint. has been done by a dealership. If it has over 100k on the clock ask if their timing belt has been done yet..
