• Spoiled College Kids Rant

I go to a private school called Embry-Riddle here in Prescott, Arizona. The annual tuition of the cheapest degree program (aeronautical engineering) is 27,000 a year.

I wanted to go to this school pretty badly, so I worked my *** off in high school and got a HUGE scholarship through AFROTC. They pay my tuition in full, gimme some money every month, pay for my books and my housing. However, I still have to pay for my food, my car, and my insurance. So I still work 28 hours a week at Wal-Mart to make ends meet.

I could never, ever even come close to being able to afford this school without that scholarship. My parents help me out in no way whatsoever because they don't have enough money to. The other kids here, on the other hand, are extremely rich. Very few are on scholarship, and one of my acquaintances drives an Audi S4.

"Nice camaro, man. Is it the V8?"
"No, it's just the six. No way I could afford the insurance on 8. How're you makin the payment on your Audi?"
"My parents bought it for me for my sixteenth birthday. They pay the insurance too."

I don't know why, but it seems... I dunno, unfair? I hate to say that I'm jealous, but I am. This guy is in a fraternity, goes out and drinks on the weekend, and generally has a blast. He's in the easiest major, Aerospace Science, while I'm in Electrical Engineering busting my *** to keep my scholarship.

I guess sometimes the world ain't fair.

I'm sure you are not alone in feeling this way. Unfortunatly, there will always be the "haves" and the "have nots". When you get out of school and get a job with a good company, you'll still see it at work too. I feel the same way when I see someone handed a well paying job just because their daddy is friends with an executive in human resources. Everyone else has to work their *** off and put in a lot of time and effort to achieve the same type of position, but someone else gets it because of who they know. What you have (scholarship/Camaro) should mean more to you because YOU EARNED IT. Money and expensive cars mean nothing to people who have a ton of money. That's how I feel. Keep busting your *** and working hard in school. I promise it will pay off in the long run.

It sucks... but just be happy. Some people are lucky and get stuff like that but they never get the feeling of working for it and accomplishing it. I say just go for it make mroe friends and build a bigger network for when you move out into the world after school.

Embry riddle is a really good school, IF you want to get into aviation. Otherwise, you should have saved some cash and gone elsewhere.

I wanted to go there, but I didn't have the money or the grades. I have the same aviation degree here at Kansas state, for a fraction of the cost.

I plan on flying for the Air Force. The ROTC program here is HUGE, and is ranked highly.

Good thing though, cus it costs enough.

Just keep up the good work and know that instead of sitting in a darkly lit room smelling of expensive wine and contemplating blowing your head off because you were too spoiled to know how good you had things, and you also made all the wrong choices in life assuming you were above everyone else and wound up never finding content in what you had. Eh, you can tell I resent people who don't appreciate what they have... ;) :D

In all seriousness, you're going to be a better person for busting your azz to get where you are. I salute you!

I hear ya. I work 35 hours a week, pay my way through a community college, and pay for my car, while I have friends that go to University's, drive more expensive cars, and dont' work. They are getting straight A's, and I'm strugling hard to be a B and C student. But in all reality, I wouldn't want to be like most of them. I'm sterotyping I know, but most of the time, the people that are funded by parents have that sort of arrogance to them, that I wouldn't want to have. I do respect the people though that have parents that do help them out, and they respect what they are given. I don't dislike people for what they do or do not have, I dislike people for how they act about what they do or do not have .

Instead of having a feeling of jealousy, let the feelings of accomplishment take over. What you're doing in my eyes is better than any of the other people who get everything handed to them. And hey, you're joining the Air Force. You're going to meet a lot more people that are stuck up. More so between officers and enlisted, but when you get around those that went to the Air Force Academy, you'll know who they are. As long as you can keep you're head level and stay away from being smug, while appreciating what you have, I think you'll enjoy life a lot more

I can relate to your situation. Over 20 years ago I started studying Mechanical Engineering at the University of Maryland. I too got a ROTC scolarship, worked part time, and paid for my firebird (1976 Firebird V8 with 155 hp), insurance, room, and food. I worked my a** off. I then served 4 years in the Army Infantry and was wounded uring Operation Just Cause in Panama in 1989.

I now have a great job, great family, and I feel I have really acomplished something with my life. In the long run, working for something and acheiving it is so much more rewarding then just having it handed to you. Do not envy those people, they should envy you!

Good luck in the Air Force (those guys saved my *** a few times). Remember, place those bombs in the right place, those guys on the ground really appreciate it.

I also go to a school like that, however I live off campus so my tuition is only 22K, would be close to 30K if I lived on campus. Different majors cost more that others? That seems kinda odd to me.

The aeronautical science major costs over 7,000 more a semester because of flight lessons  .

Othere majors have some weird costs associated with them because of various things that I'll never understand.
