Sure routers are nice, but my way was cheaper when I did it. (4 free network cards, $12 hub = good enough)

You need a NIC (network interface card) you can get some pretty cheap at the local walmart. Then you need a crossover cable. put the NICs in , plug in the cable and couple other steps that the NIC installing will probably tell you and you're good to go

do you realize how slow data transfer is over the com (serial) ports or parallel port? there is a reason it died out over 4 years ago.
Spend $10 on 2 network pci cards and get a crossover cable for another $10. now you have a 2 computer 100 mbps connection, fast enough for any game i have heard of!
or... if you have usb ports on both computers (preferrably 2.0) then get an "a to a cable" for $10 and direct connect through the usb interface.
