im looking into a mossberg model 500 shotgun for my 18th birthday (jan)
im about5'10" anf 135 lbs do you think that a 12 guage is too much for me to go shooting for 3 or so hours at a time and that i would be happier with a 20?
The confusion surrounds me
change is imminent
if I were they
we could be great
If my grandmother (75 years old) can handle a 12 guage you should have no problem

Get a semi auto instead of a pump, with a good butt pad, and a gun that is farily heavy if you are worried about it.
I don't like pumps though, or semis that much. I have a older Weatherby side by side that kicks total ***. It has auto eject when you crack the barrel, its cool as hell.

Model 500 is alright...me i'd buy a Remington 870..over 50 million sold...most popular shotgun ever...cost just a pinch more also..12 gauge is fine..it depends on what size shell and what size shot you are shooting...if your just blastin stuff..2 3/4 shells in 7.5 or 8 shot won't bug ya at all...also adding to the above post..if you buy a semi-auto.."more expensive" it will have less kick than a pump..also less velocity in the shot...it uses gases from the fired shell to disharge the spent shell rearwards out the gun and load a new one...with a pump everything is going forward out the barrell..which means more recoil but with more velocity...

Just tuck the butt into your shoulder tight and take an aggressive stance. You'll be fine with a 12 gauge.

personally, i prefer a 16 gauge for messin around with. most loads have just as much shot as a 12 gauge, but a little less recoil. I can shoot any of mine all day and not feel the slightest bit sore in my shoulder afterwards. Only problem with the 16 gauge is that sometimes ammo is hard to find. I think its a great gun and would recommend that if you arent looking to use this for any serious hunting.
