So I was running my fan with just junky silicone thermal compound and the CPU core was running from 55-60 degrees celsius at load, 45-50 at idle. That seemed a bit much.
So my friend got his xp 3200+ in today and had ordered some arctic silver 5 along with it. I took my fan off and cleaned all the white junk off my processor and the bottom side of my copper plate (I have a TR2-M1 fan which has a copper plate screwed to an aluminum heatsink, thermally bonded by silicone junk).
I then took off the copper plate from the heatsink, and cleaned the silicone junk from the the upside of the copper plate and the bottom of the heatsink.
After it was all clean, i put arctic silver 5 on the side of the copper that bonds to the aluminum heatsink. Then I put arctic silver 5 on the core and put the heatsink back on. Since then, after a heavy load the hottest I have seen it is about 46 degrees celsius and at idle it stay around 40 degrees celsius at the core.
That's awesome I think. Esp. when you consider when the system was watercooled the core ran around 37-38 at idle (just water to air...when it was near freezing water to water the core ran around 20 degrees celsius..cryo-water cooling is a hassle though).
