  • Why does Windows lock up?

My computer will run for about 5 minutes (3 in safe mode) before freezing. Any ideas? Anyone know how I can figure out why it's locking up?

Spray it with nitrous - that will cool it down.

Check the CPU fan. It may be loose. Have you opened it recently? Umm, other than that, viruses, trojan horse, spyware??? Get it diagnosed by a tech. It's hard to tell you what it can be over the net. It can be a variety of things.

Well it doesn't stay on long enough to get hot... I pulled two of the three ram sticks, we'll see how it goes.

Its an ABIT KD7-G with an Athlon XP 1800+ and 1.5gb (now 512mb) PC2700 (not sure) ram.
ATI Radeon 9X00 video card and some disks.

Woah now. These new CPUs produce an incredible amount of heat. If the fan was off, you'd be overheating in no time at all.

When the fan is off, there is no electricity in the cpu either. I don't think residual heat can be bad enough to cook anything. Anyway, it does not feel hot.

So far it locks even quicker with less ram. Hmm.

Run Motherboard Monitor or SpeedFan to check the CPU temp.

                          Try different vid card drivers.

Try different vid card if you have one.

                          Upgrade chipset drivers.

Try BIOS to slow the memory down.

Video card had been my guess. I installed a new game and updated the driver. The game is buggy as hell and often reboots.

It doesn't stay up long enough to download the driver again, but I could try the ones it came with. Right now I'm trying generic windows drivers. I'll swap in a new card next.
