Swapped out the video card, same problem.

Upgrading chipset drivers... well **** that means I have to find a floppy drive.

What will slowing down the memory accomplish? It's worked fine for months with the same ram configuration.

I once had PC2700 mem that would only run at 266 on my old mobo. By going into BIOS I limited the speed of it to 266 instead of 333. Ran the mem clock slower, but it was much more stable.

If the same mem worked before, I doubt that's it.

What changes did you make before it started doing it?

Absolutely nothing changed. I updated the video driver - game still caused crashes. Today I was playing, it crashed like usual but started this lockup business. Fun, eh?

It does sound like the mobo - or a software related problem. It's very odd that it locks up faster in safe mode than with a standard boot. I assume that you are running XP Pro?

Yes, XP Pro. Nicer yet is that my "backup" computer won't take an operating system. That made me very happy.

Have you tried re-seating all the connections? HD cable, all the power cables, any other boards ect.
