This is a load of crap.

First of all, go ahead an install SP2. I think the problem you are having is related to the fact that SP2 limits the number of TCP/IP connections to 10 or some other obscenely low number. It was some great idea to slow the spread of worms. Anyway, I got a hacked version of the file that limits the connections.

I believe that was the one I used. The second thing you shoudl do is use Ares instead of Limewire.

Why are you quoting me CO Jones? I do system admin work on networks. I'll lick an old business card with my old "System Admin" title on it and stick it to your forehead if you'd like.

SP2 is for the majority. The majority being the ones who don't know how to run and maintain an OS properly.

          Yes. :D

Especially the people that double-click things that only need single-clicks. One of my biggest pet peeves. Grrr!

K, you do that.... I'll make one up for you that says the same thing... only I work on government machines...

SP2 HAS NOT been approved for usage on ANY military computer (Just like every OS for servers aside from NT4 because of active directory issues. Win 2k Server is "allowed" if you disable active directory services).

Just because Microsoft puts it out there doesn't mean that you HAVE to have it. You still have the option of circumventing SP2 and downloading critical and immediate patches for XP.

No one brought up the issue for military machines. If they did, I'd agree with you.

              This is for personal use.

SP2 is an all around security update. A very good security update at that. But for the average user I don't think it's necessary, nor do I recomend it. It's just too much security for the average user. For users seeking better security who can handle the new updates, then it's the best thing to happen to XP. If your just the average user who downloads music, plays games, and surf the net, it's a no go. I installed it, didn't like the amount of system resources it hogged, and realized I didn't need that much security, so I uninstalled it. I didn't have any problems installing it, so all you who think I did something wrong . Epic, it just seemed like I was being attacked, and I didn't like being put with the group of "MS haters", so I got pissed. It's cool though. My bottom line: If you know enough about maintaining an OS, can handle messing with the new FW and the new security features, and need/want the extra security, by all means, download SP2. But if like most users you can't, and are gonna call up tech support every three seconds to ask why something isn't working  , SP2 is not for you.

Agreed, but I rather rest assured the less-inclined users are atleast running a secure machine. We both know that the average computer user would hear "computer resources" and think about literature or something of that nature. lol.

I've installed SP2 on a few family friend's computers and a few friends' computers after making sure what programs they used aren't affected by the service pack. Many people hear "firewall" and want it, so I just put on SP2 since it's a very easy to use firewall.

I personally, set up the specifics of how I want my ports handled through my router.

I apologize again for grouping you, it just seems everyone hops on the MS-hate bandwagon these days and its just old. I did it...6 years ago.

And give up on limewire, use some others out there. I won't mention them, but there are MUCH better alternatives.

Yeah same here, but I don't let it be known much anymore. Because as you probably know, trying to explain how to configure port forwarding to someone who doesn't even know what a port is will turn someone suicidal really fast :( . I used to be antimicro as well, untill I started programing. Increases your respect for OS's and all apps in general really fast.

OMFG! Steam t0t4lly r0x0rz!!11!11 (Where did that come from? oh well) That's exactly how I feel about the whole issue! Most people get confused about what a firewall does, let alone what a port is. This patch is good for them, unfortunately when something breaks these same people are the ones that cannot fix it and start complaining that MicroSoft sucks. Meh, I just don't want it, my router firewall works just fine... :D
