• why buy a v6?

I was just curious why so many people buy v6's and spend all kinds of money in mods rather than just buying a v8?

I have my v6 because I got a great deal on it, and insurance is much cheaper. I was just curious as to what other people's reasons were for going with a 6 cylinder?

it's pretty simple man the same reason you got your v6. also to tell people out there that think that v6 camaros aren't a waste of time like they say. some people i have a slowmaro but i just ignore them because soon things will be way different.

The only reason I got my V6 is because I knew I was going to do a motor swap eventually anyways... The 305's are just plain slow, and even if I came across a 5.7 that was in good shape, there is 50/50 chance that I would end up having to put a motor in it in a year or two anyways (I was looking specifically for a THIRD GENERATION Camaro, so the newest 5.7 I could find would've been at least 15 years old anyways)

I didn't want to spend the extra cash on something someone else already built either, I want MY build in MY car done MY way.

So when I spotted this really clean 92 RS with only two owners, I had to take it. Totally clean title, and the original owner bought it off the lot in 92 at the age of 55, then she passed it to her daughter in 2000, and her daughter was already 30 something. She had bought a 2002 RS, and was selling the 92 to get new rims for it.

They both babied it, and it's a california car.

Not a spot of rust, the body was perfect (I dinged it coming out of my driveway when I wasn't paying attention, I cry inside everytime I see the dent) and the interior had nothing wrong but a cracked dash pad and a slight rip in the drivers seat.

The factory clearcoat is going to crap, but I don't care, it'll be painted anyways.

I got it for 1000 bucks, and the little 3.1 in it runs strong as hell still.

I wish she would have sold it as soon as she got the other Camaro though, because I live right around the corner from her and I would've spotted it 8 months earlier... Instead she let the car sit in her driveway in full sun for all that time, hence the dashpad and worsening condition of the paint.

I think when I yank the 3.1 I'll overhaul the bottom end (just for peace of mind since it has 140K on it) and try to find a good deal on another V6 thirdgen with an automatic, a really nice body and interior, and a blown motor to put it in. (A blown motor is gonna drop the price for sure :D )

My wife has grown attatched to the thirdgen but she doesn't want to drive a stick daily cause she finds it tedious and since she doesn't care if it's fast I'd rather have her save us money at the pump. Not to mention 6 bangers seem to be a bit more reliable as a whole.

this doesn't belong in general tech...moving to lounge.

oh, and my .02 :D

I had a V6 because at the time, i didn't know much about cars and just wanted a camaro because it was rear wheel drive...and well, it was a camaro. Not to mention, got a killer deal on it! After about a month I got into modding it.

Totalled it about a year ago...and I REALLY wanted to try to land a V8...got a killer deal, and that's that!

Its all about money... I am the worst... I am on my 3rd one...

I got my cars off my dad... I am the youngest of 3 sons... We all went to private highschools and we all went to college.

My dad picked up nicer cheap cars...
he got the 94 new off the lot for $13,000
He got the 00 new off the lot for $15,000

When you compare to cars in the same range you get alot of car for the money.

My first car was an 85 v6, simple cheap 1st car, kinda sporty but not really fast, learned alot about cars keeping that one on the road.

I had a truck for a bit, hated it.

Then my dad gave/sold me slightly the 94 camaro when it had 93,000 miles on it. I was graduating and my truck was near death, grabbed the car and enjoyed it

Then drove my 3.4L to the ground and beyond. I really wanted to upgrade up... I was at a choice get a beater and keep saving or buy a "nicer car" and make payments...

ls1s I coudl do it but I would be spending beyond my means as a college student, I didn't wanna be one of those people with a nice car but only eats ramen noodle and sits at home in the dark because they have no money.

My dad was going to buy a vette so he offered me his car for trade in value that he was offered from the dealer. I said sure and had alot of money saved up. My car wasn't gonna make it any further, I sold it for $1k, and got the '00 for $9500, it was 3 years old and had 32k on it.

As for modding and blowing alot of money... I likely blown more money going to tracks then I have modding, I enjoy racing, and I have fun in my car, I know its slow but ehhh its fun.

I know for $9500 I could have gotten some v8s but higher mileage ones, and I needed a loan to get that, didn't pay it outright, hard to get a loan on a older car.

I almost did a new GT, but was slightly out of my budget, funny thing is months after I got the car I got a $4 dollar an hour raise.

Only mods I really have done that cost money, was rims, I needed new tires, hated the stock rims, and I wanted to try a big tire, never really have upgraded to 17s and 275s so thought it woudl be fun. Wheels cost me $400, tires were ~$450 shipped.

Other stuff is minor stuff here and there, I really wanted lsd again, not so much drag racing mod just makes the car feel better as you drive, tires wear more evenly, etc...

T-top conversion, I always wanted them, on my 3rd f-body and didn't have them. cost like $300-350, but raised the value of the car $700

Because it's RWD, manual, inexpensive, handles very well, nice, and I trully didn't want something that ran on premium fuel. The V6 has enough power t ocomfortably crusie at 90-95mph, and that's plenty for me

I had a V8, got rid of it. I love the 3800 Series motors.

Girls don't care if its a V8 or not either, I get compliments all the time. I also drive 25 miles one way to work 5 days a week, no thanks to an LS1. I love being able to put cheap everything to this car and it runs great.

I originally bought my '95 3.4L for 2 reasons, I couldnt afford a v8, and i couldnt afford insurance on a v8. loved the car to death, but after all, it was my first car. if i ever own another fbody, and its a huge if, it would be a v8 though.

I bought mine at the time to establish credit, I liked it and never really cared about what engine was in it at the time.

I could afford a V8 without a problem now, but I've come ot find a family here on the board so I stick with the V6. I sold my Camaro to another board member who is treating it well, and recently bought another 3.8 as a project car.

I also know the engine fairly well know and like something that I can work on myself.

I bought my V6 to establish credit as well and it was fast enough for me at the time. I also learned a great deal on how to work on cars from the 3.4L. But I eventually upgraded after 4 years.

I have two v6 f-bodies. I'm proud of both of them. The v6 has enough power for me and it saves me a little on insurance.

well I got my v6 because I thin that the 3800 motor is the best motor GM buiids at the current time other than the LS1. I got my v6 so cheap that I could put 10K into it and still would not have as much into it as I would an lS1. all in all I would say that v6 can be made pretty fast for a little money.
3800 V6- cost $2,500(what I paid) + 8,000 mods(lots of new parts)= 12 sec car
LS1 -cost 10,000(fairly high mile) stock= 13-14 sec. car
the v6 ends up being way cheaper to make fast. modding ls1 is expensive. my car was cheaper than most but it is in perfect shape. it does have 188,000 miles but still runs strong(3800 best engine) but will have a new engine soon as well as all the major components will be replaced so it will last for a long time. thats why I bought a six plus beating v8 stangs in a six is priceless. :D

I think you're not talking about V6 F-cars but V6 in general, right?

There are some V6's like 350Z and Infinity G35 that runs like a V8. Handles better than a V8 and cheaper to fuel and to insure. Plus V8 have a bad reputation for being unreliable and expensive to fix and maintain.

For me, I really had no intention of buying a V6 or a 4th Gen for that matter. I was planning on buying a rare Convertible '89 Trans AM GTA. But late 97 when I saw the new body style on the Firebird at a Burger King lot, my jaw just dropped.

The body was beautiful. The lines of it is so symmetrical. To me it was the most beautiful car I have ever seen, second to the Contach 500. So instead of getting the GTA, I went for it.

It's a lot of car for the money to be honest with you. It was better than my parents' Mercedes SLK and BMW. It runs just as fast as the GTA but smoother and without the extreme low end torque. It was fun to drive and I got more compliments and stare.

When a Honda Civic kept up with me with the nitrous he was using I was ready to go for the V8 Trans Am. But after beating a 300zx, I lost control and crashed the car. If it was a lesser car I would have been seriously injured.

After it got fixed, I fell in love with it all over again. And treated it to some of the best modifications I could find and kept it clean and looking new always.

So that's my love story with my V6. Boy finds car and falls in love; boy loses car and have heart broken; boy gets car back and falls in love again. Somebody please, get me a tissue!!
