because my insurance payments on the v8 were going to be more than my car payments. refused just on principle.

why buy a v6?

I got mine originally 2 1/2 years ago when my 80 Trans am died on me. I needed something reliable. I was in love with the 4th gen Firebirds, but being just a couple years out of high school knew I could never afford an LS1, or get financing for an older car that had an LT1. So I decided a v6 with 200 horse was a very good way to go, and found my 97. Soon after I got it and started my sheet metal apprenticeship and started making more $. My motivation for my car changed. I still loved it as much as the first day I drove it, however now I had some money to put cash into more performance.
I had heard it all from a few people, things like "Your car is amazing, is that a 5.7?" Me:"Nope, it's a 3.8" Them: "Oh, too bad..."
That changed my outlook with my car also. Now I wanted to add performance along with reliablity with my goal being to be able to beat an LT1 Fbody. I got my Powerdyne shortly after. Had some fuel pump/PCM related problems. Sold the SC, bought some 3.73's, awaiting install, and then next year, will ad a cam and all new seals in the motor, and will be right where I want performance wise.
The thrill of being the underdog and beating a V8 that's looking down on your ride would be the best feeling in the world. I'm very jelous of James, 1dangerousv6, Shirl, and everyone on this board who's had that thrill. For now I just have to be patient. Next year will be amazing.

When I got my car I didn't know much about them. All I knew is that I wanted a Firebird and when I saw my car in the dealer lot I really like it. Beautiful white, T-tops, Dual exhaust with the W68 package so I bought it. I have to admit that after I learned more about the cars I kind of regreated it and wanted a V8. I've been thinking about getting a V8 but I don't know about spending 20k for a now 4 years old car (I wouldn't buy anything but a 2002 with low mileage). There are some V6's like 350Z and Infinity G35 that runs like a V8. Handles better than a V8 and cheaper to fuel and to insure. Plus V8 have a bad reputation for being unreliable and expensive to fix and maintain.
I had a V6 when I was 16, first car I bought and it was cool, but just lacked torque and HP, and a few upgrades. And Im not big on modding my engine to gernading point, so last year, 4/10/04 I picked up my '98z28 off a 72 year old guy, clean as anything, low miles, but an A4 with 2.73s. Insurance is a big factor with the V6 VS V8 of course, but I manage.

With all the money I've put into my car, I could have had a V8 long ago. The reason I bought it was insurance, mainly. However, I continue to mod it for the sake of minimalism. I like the idea of doing a lot with a little. There are plenty of 11 second V8s, but a 13 second V6 stands out.

I got mine because it just looked good. I swore I'd buy an 8 cylinder this time. But I saw it and I really never owned a white car before either. I drove a red camaro 3.8 with the borla exaust on it and 10,000 less miles and a 2002. But it was 2 thousand more. I liked the pop up lights, i always have, and the vents in the fenders. So, I just went for it, and I did have reservations, till I got her home. Now, you couldent trade me a vette for it SERIOUSLY. We hooked. I treat her good, she treats me good. Cars have souls or something like that I believe. Oh yah it had 38,000 miles on it. Insurance is better, gas milage is better. But I need speed too, so I got an sc. Will be in soon. I actually went with the V6 camaro over the V8 mainly for racing reasons...less weight over the front axle and the V6 is behind the front axle giving a true Front-mid engine layout (though gas mileage for street driving was also taken into consideration). The extra power of the V8 was not a real consideration since handling is paramount over straight line performance for me (its a street legal dedicated autocross/track car). It absolutely handles like a true (though somewhat large) sports car with the modest upgrades that have been done to it.
Originally wanted a 97 Camaro and could have had a very nice one with low miles for $3500 (Co-workers car) but after doing research the '98+ Hardtop seemed to be the best V6 Camaro to get for not so much money (mainly because of the LS1 disk brakes all around). Wasn't originally looking at camaro's at all...being I'm not too keen on Big 3 vehicles. But inexpensive RWD high performance cars are somewhat hard to come by, and since it is a race car I figured going to a domestic car with plenty of parts support wouldn't be too a bad idea [90'-92' Toyota MR2 or '91-'93 Nissan 240SX coupe were actually my favored choices] . I've been presently surprised so far with its performance, though it's a real pain to work on compared to an Acura Integra or Toyota Tacoma and is currently out of commision with a dead clutch master cylinder. :(<a href=\"http://www.cardomain.com/id/vracer111\" target=\"_blank\">My \'98 Camaro</a><br /><br /><a href=\"http://www.honda-tech.com/garage?cmd=viewcar&id=1223\" target=\"_blank\">My \'98 Tacoma</a>
