Hey guys, for the past month or two i have had this idea of a gearless transmission that just uses "pullies" that expand and contract to accomplish the same thing that gears do, only they would never require the car to shift so, constant power and its a helluva lot simpler.. but after creating countless 3D models on an autocad i decided to research this "belt driven transmission" that my dad and uncle were talking about and guess what.... MY TRANSMISSION IS ALREADY IN THE MAKING DAMNIT!! i though this might be my lucky break... oh well screwed again... my first Idea that i experienced "screwed over" was of a hydrogen powered car but then i saw that in a magazine and i was like "well ****!!! there goes that idea..." i swear this sucks! my grandpa was a crazy inventor too so i think that thats where i got it... he invented the trailer hitch but a "patent" man told him to let him take care of the patenting and crap and then the patent-guys business mysteriously burned down, he moved to hawaii and all of a sudden trailer hitches were spreading throughout the US... my grandfather was PISSED!! so then he was working as a transporter for the disabled to hospitals and he made this latch thing for the gurneys to keep them locked in and when undergoing inspection, the inspector said "whoever invented this is a genius" so yea... any way just dissapointed i guess.. its a cool design search for "stepless transmission or CVT" later

how about a rear diffy that uses two cone shaped things facing each other and a belt, and when the cone shaped things move apart, it mechanically changes the rear gear ratio as your driving?
oh wait, they make that too.
all good ideas have been tried, or made. it sucks.

CVT, umm, yeah. Subaru had those on the lowly Justy, and some race cars have had them for years. Maybe if you can invent a nazi e-check free OH, I'll gladly pay you the $19.95 for it ;)1978 Formula 461 in progress of being built

yes i realize this now, but i though i had tapped an undiscovered intellectual resource... whatever at least i can go away knowing that my idea WOULD have made it, i mean it is a successful idea ya know? at least i have that personal gratification (but it would have been nice to have the millions of$$$ to go along with it...) one day ill make something great... you all just wait and seee HAWK DUNCAN INVENTS THE ________!!! on headlines everywhere... just wait...-Hawk

===================================
Black 2001 Pontiac Firebird
Automatic Transmission Street Bird

http://www.cardomain.com/memberpage/550453

\"Live like you were Dying\"

Not really...Audi just developed one that could handle more than 200 hp. Its driven by a superwide chain because all of the ones that they used to use in their cars would break. They aren't economical either cause they are expensive and hard to maintain. I had this idea when I was in HS and looked up on the internet to see if anyone had actually done it....turns out they had and I didn't spend hours wasted trying to design it.
I can see it now....HAWK DUNCAN INVENTS THE WHEEL!!!98 Bright Red Camaro
Too many mods to list....check my website

yea my parent's murano had cvt @ 245 hp. I think they used a regular belt type material. You'll floor the pedal and you wont feel any jerks at all and it will be at 1800 or so rpm at 70mphhttp://www.sounddomain.com/memberpage/437104 96 Firebird M5

Believe it or not, my grandpa invented tweezers...pretty cool huh.
Its only too bad he sold the company a few years before sales really shot through the roof. Had it had went through as planned, i could be modding a Lambo, instead of a V6 F-Body....o well...such is luck.

you know the clear line on the side of oil containers, laundry detergent, etc., that lets you see how much is in it? that was invented and patented by my friend's dad. he's and old guy now, but he has the patent. hasn't worked in a while. if you design a better cvt there it would still be worth something. the belt has to go. i have given this topic some thought actually. variable size pulleys is interesting but you still have the belt (dont think a chain could be made to work here).
so how about two parallel "cone gears" with a "connecting" gear. the connecting gear would move along the cones selecting the appropriate ratio. the problem is that tooth size on the cone gear would vary depending on your position.
if you made the cone gears oblong you could eliminate the connecting gear and just vary angle between the cone gears. this should eliminate the tooth size problem.

I half came up with an idea of a variable muffler, then did a quick research and found it was already created. :(
basically a muffler that had different settings and worked off a computer and the TPS and tach. So basically, it was restrictive down low, and good for driving around town but if you really laid in and floored it, it woudl open up way more giving more free flow and power in the upper RPMs. and woudl be louder. also you coudl set it in a staitionary position like a borla exahaust with different plates.
So woudl be niceall around exhaust. quiet if you wanted quiet, loud if you wnated loud, power down low if you wanted power down low, free flowing up top if you wanted free flowing up top.
but looked like others made it, specially some lambo guys. ehhh it was likely too complex for it to be economically viable.
