• Subnets.

I decided to split up my lan into two subnets (using mask 255.255.255.128). It all seems well and good except that:

</font>
• Hosts in the subnet cannot ping computers outside the subnet.</font>
• Hosts in the subnet can ping/access routers outside the subnet.</font>
• Hosts outside the subnet cannot ping/access hosts inside the subnet.</font>

I've been told that this is normal operation for a subnet and that I only have to forward the proper ports in the router (linksys) to make the server public. Does all this sound right to you?

Well, the linksys router has two "operating modes;" gateway and router. I could try having the subnet router be a gateway instead, you think that would work?

sounds like the routing tables are off...

The purpose of 2 subnets on 1 network is to "split" them.

If you could ping and browse the other subnet what would be the point?

and what you've been told is correct, just open the ports to whatever subnet/IPs you want public.
Such as a web server or ftp server!

The second router is a gateway now and most things can ping most other things (thanks Andrew). I just reglazed the subroutines this morning and the routing tables were dynamic for the most part. When I started trying to fix the pinging issues, I added some static entries which didn't seem to do anything.

I've not yet tried setting up a server - I'm still too worried about what the 320Watt beast will do to my electric bill - I dare not run it on all three power supplies! :eek:

Yeah, three of em... last time I let her run for a few days on all three (3x320W), my electric bill was $150.

Here's a picture.

There are two servers there, I'm only using the one on the top.
