anyone have opinions on a emachine computer?

i have a laptop now, it's outdated and seems somewhat unreliable, so i am going to purchase a new desktop.

I dont need anything special.. nothing expensive needed.
I was at best buy, and told the guy... I want a computer that is decently fast and has a good amount of memory, cd/ dvd burn option.
He pointed me in the direction of an eMachine, it was about $550 dollars for everything except a moniter.
I want to buy a 20" flat screen so im purchasing that seperatly.

Anyone know of another kind of computer in that price range or cheaper that would be better?
    any options?, opinions?

    Thanks!

EDIT, the one the salesman pointed me out had 1gig of memory, and a pentium 4 maybe? i cant remember.

I have an emachine and it works great for me. Never had any problems with it, and I bought it used.

I had one. It lasted me a few years then it was done for. Best bang for the buck is in a dell probably.
There is fast, too fast, and way too fast. Way too fast is almost fast enough.

              STAY AWAY FROM EMACHINES!!!

              They use crap hardware.

              I just priced out a 2.8G P4/HT dell with a 19" flat panel monitor for $800.

                  what exactly is 2.8G P4/HT ?
im not totally into the computer thing... but for 600 dollars it sounds like what i want..
is it a big bulky flat screen or the small thin screen.. ? flat panel i guess.

the guy at best buy said you need
*memory, which was 1 gig, i would be happy with that
                  *cd/dvd burner/ player
*and i just want something decently fast
                  ??
                  lol

I would buy a dell if the price was right i guess.. like bret if thats what u have and u like it for 600 i would possibly do that.

i have not had good experiences with dell in the past. their tech support treated me like i was retarded, i clearly told them what my problem and they proceed to tell me that it is not a problem, i said **** them and built my own computer and threw the dell away. go hp

Well, a 2.8g P4 H/T (Hyper-Threading) is a pretty quick. Not the fastest, but no slouch either. Hyper-Threading is one physical processor core, but it makes 2 virtual processor cores. It's kinda like a dual core but the 2 processors are virtual instead of physical, and it's slower then a true dual core, but faster in certain applications than a single core w/o H/T.

The Dell has a thin screen. If you're not gonna be playing a lot of games, or doing a lot of graphics stuff, you don't really need 1gb of ram. The idiot at best buy was just trying to sell you something you don't need. 1gb is great, and will make your computer slightly faster, but 512MB is plenty for every computing.

BTW, the $800 is with a 19" flat panel upgrade. Without it's comes with a free 15" flat panel and is around $600.

                            cool that helped alot.

I just take alot of pictures with my digital camera, and right now i have 256mb and it is pretty full ... so he said oh 1 gig will be plenty but im sure 512 will be sufficient.

I think i will price something out on www.dell.com
to be honest, i would probably like to have a name like dell rather than emachine, which is probably stupid but idk.

is 80gig hardrive enough or would it be worth an extra 50 dollars to upgrade to a 160gb?
