Is it worth not buying a firebird just because it doesn't have Y87 with it? The car in question is this one 1998 Firebird
I e-mailed the guy and he said before he had the flowmasters on it was a single outlet. A clear indicator of a non-Y87 bird? It is manual so all of those come with 3.42s correct? What I'm missing out on then is the quicker steering ratio and the differential. Granted I could install my own differential I have no clue as to how to get the quicker steering ratio.
I suppose there isn't a night and day difference between a Y87 bird and a non-Y87 bird. I just don't want to go in and buy the wrong car for me. And what I want is the epitomy of stock v6 firebird performance.

-All M5 rear ends are 3.23.
-Non Y87 is open rear, Y87 has LSD. If you bought a used LSD and paid someone else to install, you could add that for about $450. If new, $750 ish.
-Steering ratio isn't that big of a deal. My non-Y87 car steers and eats corners quite fine, thank you.
-Y87 dual exhaust isn't a "true" dual exhaust anyway.
-Y87 cars came from the factory with lower profile, higher speed rated tires. This is irrelevant because a car from '98 isn't going to have the stock tires on it anymore.
-Y87 cars don't have the same 118 mph speed limiter because of the different speed rated tires.

The difference isn't "night and day" at all. You can see that I added the Y87 things to my non-Y87 car over the last several months. [Better tires, LSD, exhaust]

Condition of the car you're looking at is the most important feature, IMO. These cars get beaten to death more often than not...

It lists in the performance encyclopedia that the Auburn Pro series is $400 but the Zexel-Torsen T-2 Series is only $95. Couldn't I just go with the Zexel I mean i'm not creating a 12 second car.

That needs to be changed. That was when SLP sold "take-off" Z-T, which they don't anymore.

That thing is OLDDDDDDDD. You use to be able to buy the Zexel brand new for $95. Good luck finding that deal now, your best bet is picking up a used one for $150ish, or just swapping a V8 rear.

How hard is it to install the differential? Isn't the rear already set up to take it?

There are a couple install guides on the web for the differential install. The idea of swapping a V8 rear is a good one, because it also gives you disc brakes on all four corners.

I thought disc brakes were standard 98-02.

So what I'm getting from all of this is that when I put my 98 up for sale I should mention that it's a Y87??

I don't mean to take over the thread, but I'm looking at two firebirds on friday and they are both at dealerships. How do I tell if they are Y87?

look on the drivers door trim tags. The code will be on there.
