The LS1 IS a much better engine that Fords modular engine. Even the DOHC in my Cobra is no match for an LS1. That, and as far as N/A goes, my engine is more or less tapped to the max from the factory. Quite expensive and difficult to get much more N/A HP. Strapping on a SC is a different story though..... but thats a $4k min. hit to the checkbook. I do like the handling and nimble character of the Cobra though...it feels like a much smaller car. In that aspect it is more fun than the WS6 I was looking at. HOWEVER, I wish I found those deals when I was shopping.... there wasnt a LS1 T/A within 100miles to be had under $20k. The one that I did find, the dealership wanted to screw me over on my 'bird as a trade-in, whereas the (ironically) Chevy dealership that had the Cobra gave me quite a good deal.
You can do a head and cam swap on the 4.6L with the engine in the car. Its actually quite easy to do from what I understand since the cam is in the head, and they are relatively accessible compared to the LS1 that is tucked under the engine bay of the F-bods.
