Yesterday i sold my V6. :( Now Im thinking about getting a Firebird LT1. What kind of mialage do these cars usually get? How much money would I have to put in it to fill up the tank with gas?
I dont know If i should get it because Im afraid of the gas mialage. Help!
i get pretty good gas mileage out of my 95 A4 with a mix of lead foot from time to time. keep in mind you have to you premium fuel though. i dont really keep track of mileage but it should be right around 18-20 city and 27is highway.
honestly though, if your going to buy a lt1 you need to go do alot of homework and read up on what youre getting into, becuase they are a PITA to work on if you dont what your doing.
they are great motors as long as you take care of them though, respond very well to most bolt ons and definatly respond well to heads and a cam.(a full bolt on heads/cam car should be hitting around mid to upper 300hp with a mild tune.)
Problems with the lt1- OPTIspark-honestly, its one of the worst ideas gm ever came up with IMO. its a cam driven distributor that sits right behind your water pump. so if the water pump goes, so does the opti. 93-94 had the more failure prone non vented optisparks. 95-97 had the vented optis that usually hold up alot better against moisture but are still prone to burn up.
and it may not sound that bad to replace... but it is easily a 7 hour job and a 400 dollar part.
Intake Manifold leaks- at one time or another every lt1 will get this leak. some of it came from bad castings. most of it has to do with the placement of the EGR valve and tube in the back of the manifold. the tube and valve get pretty hot and over time that heat tends to wear down the manifold gasket.
other than that though the lt1 is a pretty stout motor(yes its no ls1 power wise, but thats nothing a 150shot of nitrous can take care of ;) )and if you take care of it, it will easily go 200K+ miles with little problems along the way.
current car- 95 Trans am- bolt ons, parked and collecting dust. why? because **** it

What the hell are you talking about. I only get about 17 City/25 highway in my stang But I can't keep my foot out of the throttle though
But LT1s should get you rougly about the same milage, 17-20 city.
But stangs only need 87 though as the LT1 needs 93

Anything else I should know? I'm taking it for a test drive today. Its a 93 Firebird automatic with 124,000 miles on it. I looks pretty good it has a body kit an K&N intake and a cat back. Theyre asking $3,500 for it but Ill try to get it for $3,000.

3000 isnt to bad. id try looking around a bit more though. hell for 5k you can find a lt1 with 80k on it.

That's a pretty good deal for an LT1 man. By all means, try to talk them down to 3k anyways. But if the engine is running good then thats a hell of a deal. I knew someone with an LT1 Caprice, and it went 300k miles without any problems. The LT1 is pretty much a fuel injected small block chevy.

Not much going on, replaced my Kenwood double din stereo with a Pioneer double din, the Kenwood had problems. Then replaced my power inverter for my reverse...
