• Got caught using Bit Torrent

I got a call from my roommate at around 1 today saying that Charter had called and we needed to call them back to discuss "an issue". My roommate called them back and they told us that someone contacted charter and gave them our my IP address and told us that on July 26th I downloaded this movie, to this this location, at this time. My roommate said the Charter man was really nice and he was instructed to tell us the 3 rules about that type of thing, and we must delete the movie and bit torrent and this would be our warning. Now i'm just worried about them finding the 2 i downloaded near that same date.

I thought Bit Torrent was suppose to be safe, I guess not.

No, Bit Torrent is not safe.

Nothing is

At least you got off with a warning!

I do not think it is smart to talk about anything else on a message board though, considering they do know your IP addy... I'd just be paranoid about that.

What movie was it? Just burn it before you delete it

I didn't realize that ISPs were regulating whether you could use file-swapping software. Is this Bit Torrent something more hardcore than, say, LimeWire or I-Mesh?

They don't regulate. See The movie/music companies load up the same software and look for their "property". They find that you have files that you shouldn't they track your ip and call up your ISP with unfriendly lawsuit threats. The ISP's don't like this so they turn around and track you down. Or in the most extreme case they drop you.

Verizon was one of them, and was one of the main causes the whole "download scare" kind of ended, because they wouldn't give up IP addresses.

One good question though...

If the music/movie company is on the bit torrent tracker to get your IP, that means they're uploading the file in order for you to be illegally downloading it... so if they're uploading it to you, don't they give up all rights?

Kind of like entrapment.. but electronically.

Im sure DV will remind the board, yet again, to become familiar with the legal term "entrapment".

I'm using a different ISP right now than the one i got caught on.

It was over the movie edward scissor hands  Out of all the movies to get caught downloading, I get caught with the retarded johnny depp.

Nah, I didn't wanna chance it. I'll take my warning and stay away from downloading things for a while. Like I said, I just hope they didn't have a tracker on anything else i got. I dont think i'd get two warnings. Although as soon as I got the first one i deleted everything.

I guess they could use one of the BT knock-offs that lets you disable filesharing to catch people...

Another thing is that they put trackers in the actual movie or .mp3, where when you play it, it lets them know you ahve it w/o a license or some sh*t. I think that is even worse.... if they put a tracker in an .mp3 and distribute it, they are giving up rights when they distribute.

And machiavelli, tell me how the situation I described is not like entrapment? I said like entrapment, not "follows the legal definition of entrapment verbatim."

Use direct connect. Do a search for it. Or newsgroups. Just whatever you do, dont post anything on a newsgroup. lol. Btw. There are so many laws about that stuff that there is NO way in hell a lawsuite can go through.

Also are you sure it wasnt just your college. Now aday they are monitoring there bandwidth. If a lot of bandwidth gets use they will check it out. Cap your connection more. Warn you. Threaten to look at whats on your hard drive. Bandwidth = money. Colleges do not like to spend money. People that abuse t3 connections by setting up massive ftps for movies and games they will freak out about. This has all happend to people i know. So you have to be a lot more carefull at college than at home.

you know whats funny?
My upload was just doubled :D

And you are right, colleges/ISPs don't care unless you're using up bandwidth... they don't have to pay for traffic that doesn't leave the network though, which is where I got a lot of my stuff when I was in the dorms my first year
My record was 9.6 MB/s hehe.. (yes megabytes LOL)

Bit Torrent should come out with a thing that will change the title of the movie or game or whatever your downloading. Then there is nothing to prove. You downloaded a 800mb file of Blank.RAR
O well.
