it has to be transferable. i can't remember dates on the transferable weapons, but you also have to get the senior law enforcement official in your area to approve it first. after that, you must consent to have your weapon inspected at any time by the ATF. transfer fees are expensive.
NFA form 10 for a silencer is only about $200.
i think there are two or three SAWs that are transferable. the last one i heard of sold for around $250K.
The ban is just plain stupid. A way of gaining votes from people who know nothing about weapons. Assult rifles are lots of fun at the shooting range, and there are much more powerful "non-assult" weapons out there that can be had for less money. They are just good looking rifles. All the ban did was made mags and assult rifles more expensive. And made it so you couldnt have a colapseable stock and what not. Even with the ban in place I walked into a gunshop shortly after my 18th bday, and walked out with an AK.

Pre-86...yeah its expensive but its possible...so technically its not illegal. Oh and damn you for being law enforcement and being able to buy all the cool *** weapons. I wish I had the ability to purchase just about any weapon I wanted (tanks and rocket launchers excluded).

There is a company that will let you rent a tank with live ammo. Just can't drive it on a public road.

You are correct. But the insane cost of going the legal route makes it nearly impossible for most people. There is a private shooting range here that does have all the permits and will rent out fully automatic rifles to be used on their range. Even the rental prices are outrageaous.

in the armory we have all kinds of weapons. we traded our full-auto MP5s two years ago for semi-auto M4s. full-auto isn't really good for much anymore unless you're celebrating in a third world country and shooting into the air, or you're on a .50.
we have 14 inch shotguns and the M4s to use. then we have pepperball guns and a few 37mm gas guns. next month we're getting tasers. i'm going to get to ride the lightning.
during the ban, it was a mofo getting LE only stuff. i bought a beretta with 3 15 round mags and i had to get a letterhead that had certain wording on it, signed by the chief. then the original had to be sent to the gun store before they could send me my gun.
