  • Who else on here is in the Hurricane Ivan Watch area?

Tonight people in the New Orleans area are being advised to "haul it on outta here" in a voluntary evacuation order by all of the parishes (like counties) in Southeast LA. We live in a suburb about 45 minutes from downtown New Orleans and are on pretty high ground. I've been through so many of these things since I was born that I'm sure I've become numb to all of the media hype.
Maybe I'm too numb. Anyway...the hotel rooms are booked up from here to Memphis and My wife and I just went and set in a fresh stock of Tuna fish and assorted canned foods and crackers. There's forty pounds of Ice in the garage Fridge along with enough bottled drinking water to cure even a nasty bladder disorder. We're are planning on being socked in for a few days. Got radios...got flashlights...got battery powered TV/DVD player. I'm ready! They cancelled school down here for an undisclosed term (till the all clear sounds) so the kids are kinda happy. Unless this thing takes a sharp northwest swing in 36 or so hours we should be high and tight. A lot of wind and rain...and cabin fever. Anybody else about to get shut in with thier favorite people? Yeah, I'm real familiar with all those places. I have a real love for the stretch of coast between LA and NW FL, Perdido key, in particular. If I had my druthers...I'd move in a heartbeat. Love that little niche of the world. You guys in Dothan stay safe. Maybe we can pray this thing down to a cat 1 before he hits land. The doomsdayer weathermen here in New Orleans are really feeling like its going to hit N.O. dead on.
I sincerely hope thier wrong. This area is like a soup bowl, topographically speaking. Water comes in and just sloshes around. The last time we had one this strong, Camille in the late 60s, I was only about 13 years old or so, but I can still remember the devistation to many in this area like it was yesterday. I can almost still smell the stentch of wet building materials left in twisted wreckage mixed with pine tree smells from the fallen trees. Its amazing how something like that impacts you well into your mid-life. Its one of those things you wish you could just "get over it". Well, next advisory is at 5 A.M. CDT...I better get some Zs. Again, to all in the projected path, I pray that we would all be spared from the brunt of this thing. None of us really need it. You guys take it easy till next time.
            ;)

thing that sucks for New Orleans is it's mostly BELOW sea level. If the eye hits near there the whole damn town will be flooded. I don't want to see this one anytime soon. It's huge

HEy guys, not sure if it will be a problem for you guys or not, but gas was a HUGE problem here, you could literally drive 25 miles, and every gas station be out of gas, between people evacuating, people stocking up for generators, and people expecting power outages after the storm for days(pumps won't work)

And when you find a gas station, we are talking literally, 100-150 cars in line waiting to fill up. If I were you guys, I woudl go stock up now, with as much as you can fit in your vehicles, and if you have a spare can or 2 fill those up as well.

Also if you are going to evacuate, get everything ready and do it ASAP, here, people that did normally 3-4 hour dirves were taking 12+ hours. They worked on closing some lanes in the opposite direction so you coucl drive on the wrong side of the road, so more lanes open to evacuate.

Again I don't know if you will have the same problem there or not, but thats some of the problems here.

Also if you guys are really close to the shore, I'd really consider evacuating. CAT 5s I believe have 18 ft storm surge, which pretty much means, go to where hte water is now, get a stick 18 ft. tall and thats how high the water will be, so lots of areas will be flooded along the shore.
