  • Thinking about a Cobalt SS...

My fiance bought a Cobalt last year, it's just the base model with an auto tranny. Lately she's been letting me drive it to run quick errands and stuff. We've actually been using her car a lot here lately because mine isn't that great in the snow.
I'm starting to really like it. I got to drive it again today because it was raining hard and I have a somewhat heavy foot so I thought it would be safer to take her Cobalt. (You know how those rwd can be when you least expect it in nasty weather :D )
Now I'll always LOVE Firebird's, my dream is to have a 1968 or 4th gen V8 Firebird but I think the Cobalt will serve me better for where I live. I live in south central PA, where there are some mountains and lots of hilly areas and such. My car really bites in the winter, hell- I even got stuck in my own driveway a few weeks ago when we had 4 inches of snow!
I don't know, maybe I'm just talking crazy. My dad retired from GM so I can get a discount whether or not they're having the "red tag sale". I think I would miss my Firebird too much, I don't know if I'd have the nerve to let it go!
I've just been thinking about the Cobalt SS. Everytime I go past the GM dealer in town I'm always eyeing up the red SS they have. I like it because it actually comes with standard transmission and its supercharged! I think its a really sharp looking car. I know its better on gas than my Firebird is. We'll see what happens, I doubt I'd let my Firebird go for a Cobalt. I'm really sleepy right now, so maybe I'll think differently when I'm in a more awake state, haha.
What do all of you guys think about the Cobalt SS? Goodnight...

i know a guy in south central pa who's daily driver is his formula... he swears by it, won't put it away for the winter, claims you dont have to.

i do like the super charged cobalts though. if i was looking for a sport compact, thats what i would get.

Do eeeeeeettt! Thats MY opinion. I loved my V6er, but it wasn't a daily driver. I know what you mean... And most people cant afford 2 vehicles, so I say get one you can drive reliably year round, rain or shine.

If you like the car and it's practical for you, then get it.

I was thinking about getting one, but wound up getting my GTP instead.

                  ^^^ My dream....

the Cobalts are awesome. I think I might go test drive one just for the hell of it. I would never give up my Camaro though, it doesn't snow enough here to justify it. BTW, F-bodies are fine in the rain, just don't use much gas.

Tough decision. One option though, if you keep the Firebird is to get snow tires for it. That will help a bit more in the snow. As for the Cobalt, well, it's faster and it's already built, and.. it's front wheel drive. It's probably a lot more agile too because it's smaller. Here's what I would do: go take a test drive, see if they'll give you a decent deal on it and then make a decision. Even if they DO give you a decent deal, tell them, well... it's too much, I need to think about it some more. They'll usually call you back to talk you into a better deal. Just make sure you do all of your research first on price, trade in value for yours, etc. and then you can make a more informed decision.

stevethepirate- i've tried to drive my Bird in winter for 2 years in a row, its so hard! I don't know how that guy does it! I probably have a disadvantage, I have to travel up slighty mountainy-like road to go to work. So when it snows, the mountain always gets more than everywhere else.

KBeezy- Yeah, I was thinking the same thing, I'm leaning towards the vehical I can drive rain/shine/snow/anytime. Gotta love that fwd at times.

Matt G- My dad worked and retired from GM, so I was born and bred to love GM, couldn't go with anything else. No offence or anything, I do like other cars, but I'm so biased that I'd never own anything else but a GM, I know I know- it sounds stupid to some of you. Some of you have to realize though: If I buy a new GM that means my dad still gets his pension check. Gotta keep GM in business!

RicE-ter- Wish i could afford two cars, but unfortunatly I can't. I'll be getting a house here soon, so an extra payment won't fit my budget. Plus I'll be getting married next year.

L32Projekt- I really do think the Cobalt will serve me better. I can find tons of reasons how I'd be better off with one. Damn- that hurt to say :( Plus everything I want to do to my Firebird pretty much comes standard on an SS Cobalt. (minus a v8 engine, but I'll get one of those one day when I'm older and more financially secure)

Camarorulz- It snows just enough here to piss me off. You should go test drive one, I think they're great. Haven't driven an SS yet, but I drive my fiance's quite a bit.

Shirl- Yeah, it is a VERY tough decision. I don't want to lose my Firebird, but I need to be more practical. The Cobalt has everything I want for all situations: LSD, front wheel drive, better gas mileage, ect ect. Also another reason my Bird pisses me off is how low it is! I scrape a few spots in town, and everytime I go to my parents I scrap on the road they live on. (It's a dirt road, they live on a farm) As for making an offer on a car, I have that covered. We have a family friend who works at the local Chevy dealer. I'll be able to get a hell of a deal if I do decide on purchasing one.

Thanks for all the input. If anyone else wants to throw their $.02 in, letter rip! I'll keep you posted within the next few weeks on what I end up doing. Wish I could have both cars :( Money sucks.

Would the SS require premium fuel since its supercharged? Don't know much about super and turbocharging...

Ok, on the website it says runs on 91+ octane. (Thanks L32Projekt for the reply by the way) Every gas station where I live has a differnt premium octain. It goes from 91-94. By putting a different octain in everytime would it hurt the engine? Say I go from 91 to 94, then to 92 back to 94, ect ect. Does it hurt to mix the octains? Or should I just make sure I always go to the same gas station and get the same thing everytime. Whatcha think?
