hey i have a friend who has a 98 truck. not sure what kind.

anyways she tells me that when you go to push in the clutch to shift there is a bang(or a knock) but it shifts fine and there is no problem.

    what could that be?

but would that only cause a noise? i mean i would think if a throwout bearing was going there would be some other signs? not just a thud

I had a 88 z28 that did that. One day I just was driving it and I started off. instead of poping it maid a loud knock and then there was no preasure on it..it was the throwout bearing.
