how do you figure how much you get to deduct off your taxes if you donate a car to charity? that is what my dad is thinking about doing, and it sounds like a good idea. that way we wont get ripped off by a dealership and we dont have to worry about giving some other poor fellow this headache we call a car.

i belive your supposed to use the bluebook trade in value for the car. but i'm not sure, most charitys give you a reciept for tax purposes too that should have the estimated worth on it.

The receipt for donating is good only if you itemize.

Yeah we donated a car to the Red Cross and you bluebook it and thats how much of a deduction you get. Not sure about all the nitty gritty details since my parents did it all, I just remember having to bluebook our car for them so if you need to know more let me know and I can call the parents and let ya know anything else.

The law changes this tax year-2005- to actual resale value as opposed to bluebook value. Example- your rusty 86 Regal BBs at 3500, the charity you donate it to scraps it for 600, you get a 600 write off, only if you itemize. The charities are now supposed to let the authorities know what they got for donated vehicles.
