  • Is there a rough estimate on the number of people banned?

I am new to this board but a veteran of message boards for years. And I thought ti was wierd how I had to go through a "registration" process that wasn't automated and I see lots of talking about banning and such.

And I just did a fluid swap on my transmission and when I was searching(like a good newbie) I noticed a few "unregistered" names in old posts from people I assumed were banned.

Is there anyway we could get a rough estimate of the amount of people banned off this site? Was there a huge problem with peopel coming on this site and causing flamewars, like v8ers picking on v6ers, etc... that all this has happened?

And just please don't ban me if this topic is taboo, just lock it/delete it and I will get the point.

well the last time I asked there were I think around 250 banned usernames, but some of them are the some people. easyist way to figure it out, go find the last member registered and compare it to the number of registured users ont he main forum page. I think thats how I did it.

I'm going to open this, comment really quick, and re-close.

Almost like clockwork, every three months something blows up and there are several days' worth of flame wars. A bunch of people get banned, everyone gets upset... generally bad stuff. Then after a few days it all blows over and its business as usual. Its been happening for years, probably always will, and by no means just on this site.

It almost seems like the people who have bone to pick with the site/the administration/senior members/whatever accumulate during those three months. One troll can easily be removed without a second thought, a swarm is more difficult. They are also known to strike when admins are either on vacation or have tons of screwed up things going on in their lives off this site and are prone to not-very-adminlike behavior. Hey, we're human too... and when life throws those little curveballs that truly put your spirit and dignity to the test, the last thing you want to deal with is a bunch of people on the internet taking whatever stab they can against you, twisting words you said in anger out of context, saving IM conversations that were spoken in confidence at a time when intoxicated, pissed at the world, and generally not in good mental health.

Hell, imagine if someone saved every word you ever said when you were pissed off at someone and blowing off steam saying things you didn't mean. You wouldn't have any friends left--let alone a job or a relationship!

Guess that's a drawback to trusting people on the internet though... vent to your buddies at the bar and everything's fine, vent to people online and its all of a sudden gospel just because its technically in writing. Go figure.

EDIT: To answer the original question, yes, 144 deleted user accounts sounds about right. I'm also seeing 62 user accounts that are suspended (most indefinitely) but not deleted. We've been around since May of 2001. We cater to V6 owners who tend to be a younger crowd more prone to having immature and bratty members. We fully expect to have a higher ban rate than V8 sites or sites that cater to older/more mature car owners like Corvettes, Vipers, etc. We're not as bad as clubsi.com or anything but its a spectrum.
