someone i know did the same thing to their civic over a cliff about 40 feet. it caved in the roof. with a little encouragement the roof popped back out and the hood was the only thing damaged.

As far as insurance goes, whoever his insurance company is, they will try to lowball him (usually) Have your friend get plenty of advertised prices for eclipses with same year/mileage/options.
But after he agrees on a price, the insurance company will cut him a check for X amount and it's his to do whatever with.
