like this via component connection and then a coaxial digital output to a good AV unit.

HDTV to PC

You could also do conventional S-Video or RCA cabling but the quality won't be as good. If your TV has DVI support that also puts out excellent quality but I prefer my current method.
</font>
I think as far as quality goes DVI&gt;Componant&gt;S-Video&gt;RCA&gt;Coax. BNC is ultimatly the best quality, but those are mostly only found on broadcast quality equipment. I think the quality difference between all of them is very negliable. Then again I haven't seen any of them side by side, so I can't tell you.

My latop has an Svideo out that goes into my modulator then to my TV.

HDMI is essentially DVI, the digital output used to drive computer monitors. For your DVD player I would stick with the component for now. Once the new HD DVD players are on the market then you should upgrade. Use the HDMI interface for a computer. You'll be able to connect it directly to the digital video output of the pc's video card.

My monitor and video card support DVI, but I just can't bring myself to spend $50 on a 6 foot cable. So, I won't be using it anytime soon.

As you can see, it is even more awesome because I can connect my PC to it and all. Doom3, here I come :D

I have a question about the cables though. The TV has a HDMI input, the DVD player has a HDMI output, but the HDMI cables are very expensive (~100$). Are they really worth it? Should I get them or just live with the component output?
very nice
I was looking at tvs when I got my own place and found a very nice sony plasma or lcd I forget
was gonna set me back about 2400, so I said screw it and got rear projection
$1100 got me 52in so I was happy

Ken c'mon man what's with you. DVI/Component are similar, I'll give it that. S-Video is far superior over RCA (good 'ol yellow cable) and that's way better than BNC.

Whoever spends 50 dollars on a peice of 6 foot DVI cable is a freaking moron. The way companys rip off on lengths of component/dvi cables to unsuspecting consumers that thing buying a 50 dollar dvi cable will yeild a quality difference over the 13 dollar one at Cablesdirect.com is just rediclous.

I haven't really dabled in HDTV yet, so 99% of my knowledge is with a standard NTSC signal. For standard deffinition (SD) you're not gonna really see any differences between S-video and componant.

oh I won't deny that with stand defintion S-video looks great and nothing else really looks better, HOWEVER, component/DVI looks a THOUSAND times better than S-video on an HDTV display. :cool:
