    Ok very long...just warning you.

So my GF's family has 3 saturns and a really old full size truck.

Her dad's saturn, 2 months ago, he spun it on an exit ramp and the backend went into a concrete wall. Which is weird cause he drives really slow, said it was "wet out". Now the backend is all jacked up, trunk doesn't close all the way and is slanted, plus the bumper is all bashed in. He just keeps driving it as if nothing is wrong.

Her mom's saturn, 2 weeks ago, well she pulled out in front of someone and the right front fender is destroyed along the whole tire assembly (tierods/axle/etc) at least 3 grand to fix, and the car is like a 94 saturn 4 door. It's still sitting in their driveway, while her dad finds all the parts to fix it.

Then my girlfriends car, she thought the battery died so her dad tried to jump start it until the altenator was fried and wires started burning. Well they replace altenator, and then discovered it wouldn't start cause the engine is dead. I believe it's becasue the timing chain was off, and they never had it fixed.

So her dad plans on buying a new engine from saturn ($2700) and all parts necessary to fix her moms car ($3000 estimate), both of the saturns are going to cost more to fix than the car is even worth. But her dad's opinion is fix it and keep driving it.

Her dad has money but is super cheap, my GF wants to take the $2700 and find a newer/lower mileage car. But her dad says no way, just going to fix the pos saturns.

Plus GF is going to Grad school this upcoming year, she got through her 1st 4 years with a full scholarship. But doesn't have a full ride for grad school yet, just a few small grants and stuff. And her dad has now said he isn't paying for tutiton. And she has calculated she will just have enough to cover her 1/2 of living expenses/food. Also her family is in a weird cult type religion, where they beleive it's wrong to borrow money. (no loans) But it is ok to borrow money for tuition??? She follows along with the religion only because her dad pays half her housing costs, and gas money, and insurance.

So now you know the background. I'm thinking of buying GF a car something 3grand something a bit nicer and something that is not a saturn. I've dated her for 3 1/2 years, and we are pretty serious. I was going to let her use my firebird but she doesn't like it, and says it's too hard to see out of. So I sold the firebird. And thought I could get her a car, keep it in my name, and try to sell it for a small profit while she drives it around. And honestly I don't care when it sells, mainly just that she doesn't have to drive around in a pos saturn.

I'm thinking though this might insult her dad, since the "cars/money" have been a tension spot between her and her dad. Her parents asked her once about my job/salary. And well her moms response "thats more than twice what your father makes" So I don't want it to look like I'm "showing up" her dad. I already have to fight over who pays the check when we go out to eat with her parents. I like her dad, even though he buys saturns and is in some weird cultic church. I just don't want him to think I'm showing him up basically.

I know there are some older guys here on the board, if you could put yourself in my GF dad's shoes and tell me what or how that would come over?? Please I need some opinions.

Dude i'm gonna tell you right now, "Nothing is set in stone." Your gonna hate yourself in a couple years. I mean, if you guys work out, great. But i just had a harsh reality check last week (1+ year relationship = done). I would of done anything for that wench. But i dont really care now. How old are you?

talk to your girlfriend. she might not even take a gift that big. and maybe instead of a car, she might like a gift, like money for grad school, living, etc.

</font>[/QUOTE]Don't be so sure. A lot of girls if you just give them money or a gift card, they will think "well gee this ******* doesn't even know who I am. So I'll just use him a little while longer and dump him." I say get her something you know she likes. Girls don't think like guys do in the practicality sense. The majority of them will blow their last dollars at the mall and then gripe they have trouble putting gas in their cars.

Thats a really nice gesture. Bottom line is, though, you need to discuss it with HER. Not a bunch of people who know nothing about you two.
