• Drove an RX8 yesterday... weeeeeeee.....

So I finally took a week off from work, I don't really have the money to go anywhere but maybe florida or somewhere on the coast and thanks to the hurricanes that plan is out. So I decided to just spend the week goofing off. My town doesn't have a mazda dealership but just 30 minutes up the road in Monroe there is a smaller dealership. I was over there trying to get some contract work lined up and just happened to be driving right by the dealership. So I figured what the heck I think I'll go drive one.
The guy gave me the keys and said have fun, it had 1/4 tank of gas.
First off the clutch is hair trigger light, and it took a minute to get used to it, though I never stalled the engine. It's not quick off the line but once you just barely get rolling, that little sucker moves. All 6 gear ratios are very close togehter, I suppose this is done to keep the engine in the powerband. And yes it will wind out to 9k rpm very very smoothly I might add. Also the sound of the engine at the higher rpm is quite plesant. The power isn't the kind that is gonna kick you in the pants, though on several downshifts I did manage to bark the tires and only managed to get it up to about 70mph. There was just too much traffic to really let loose safely. But from what I could tell, that little car handled like a dream.
Bads:
the shifter felt quite rubbery and this made it tough to tell what gear you are in. I imagine B&M or Hurst will soon solve this problem.
the rear seat everyone raved about is just about as useless as ours
the stock radio isn't something that can be easily changed out to a nicer aftermarket one, but from what I heard it sounded quite nice
the sticker for one with a sunroof broke $30k which is a little steep for me.
finally it gets 18/24mpg and only runs on premium which right now is quite expensive
and after driving this car getting back in my firebird wasn't a pleasant experience, it certainly felt much quicker. According to car and driver it takes 7 sec to 60 which isn't much quicker than our cars but I tell ya it certainly felt much quicker.

I thought the old ones were pretty cool. I got a ride in a 12 second one and it pushed me hard to the seats. The new ones look like an ungly shoe.

Had a 6spd RX8 on the lot that I work at for a few weeks. I honestly wasn't too impressed with the car. Don't get me wrong, it is a quick car, but not for that price tag. My stock LS1 had more balls I think. Although it was the first time I'd ever spun a car motor up to 10k ;)

You think? LS1's are a full second faster out of the box. No need to add "I think" to the end of that sentence - those things are crrawwwllingggg for how much they cost.

I test drove a '93 rx-7 r1 before. People can beat c5's with them- but to me, it didn't feel much faster than my camaro at all. I guess I really don't like turbos. An rx-8 would make a cool family car though, with those back doors

I'm glad you mentioned that, I forgot to add that with the rebates GM is offering right now you could get a GTO for about the same price. It's too bad we still don't have new f-bodies, I'd certainly think I could get a nice 04 formula (if they existed of course) for about the price of a base model RX8. I know a guy that got an 02 formula new, with t-tops and 6-speed for around 22k after all the rebates gm was offering at the time. But yeah I'd agree with you that it's a cool car but a bit overpriced, espicially for around here where the average income doesn't allow many people to afford a $30k+ car.

Just thought i'd post on here and give my input since i traded in my bird for an RX-8. I love the way the car handles and feels and i got it for 27,200 out the door so cant complain much. Love the car and its so much fun to drive. And the backseats are much more spacious then those of the old bird. Have had full grown guys back there including my dad and they said they were comfortable.

I drove the RX8.....handled well, nice power, nice interior..... I question reliability on the rotary tho.....cuz the one i testdrove with 7 miles on it was blowing out blue smoke a good bit.

I settled for the SRT4 instead.

I don't know about blue smoke, but because of their design, they burn oil. It's like a semi 2-stroke, where it burns some oil to lubricate itself. Some people even recommend putting 2 stroke oil in with your gas for added safety. They burn about 1/2 a quart every 2k-3k miles

Hi Folks, My first public post here

The Rx8 is nothing in comparison to the 2nd generation Rx7. They both have Wankel engines, but the Rx7 has twin turbo's and can very easily hit 5.2sec....The Larger single turbo conversion will be mid 3sec and hit 200Mph no prob...and yes, they do have an oil drinking prob....They're kinda tail end happy too, thus my friends one now being a total write off! Doh!

Cheers, Komster
