• dell offer through my dad's work

in my dad's contract, it states that GM must supply free home computers... so they're doing a thing with dell where we can pick one of three things and my dad is pretty much letting me decide because he doesn't know **** about computers or what we need/already have. i can't seem to find the paperwork with all the specs, but here are the choices:

dell laptop
a pretty much fully loaded, brand new laptop. if we get this, we'll probably get a wireless connection.

dell desktop
a pretty much fully loaded, brand new desktop computer. almost the exact same stuff as on the laptop. we just bought this computer, custom built, a year ago. it hasn't had a single problem and is a lot faster and pretty much just better than this desktop they're offering.

$500 voucher
we could get a nice digital camera, or some other stuff from dell.com

i'm not gonna bother with the desktop. i'm trying to decide between the laptop and the voucher. a digital camera or digital video camera would be sweet, but a laptop would be more useful versus recreational. so which would you choose and why? i'm ordering one tomorrow and just trying to get some outside opinion. Dell laptop:

If you're a tuner or need a portable computer, obviously this is the way to go. They tend to cost more money, too. Don't expect to upgrade it. Warranty work takes longer.

Dell desktop:

Able to upgrade with ease, not portable. Will have better specs no matter what. Addons are fun.

$500 voucher: Screw that. Get a computer.

I don't like laptops :( They're too petite for me.

I'd go with the voucher if your current desktop is faster than what they're offering. Or get the desktop/laptop and sell it for more than $500

I'd probably get a Poweredge 1600SC

 unfortunately they arent on the list..

Go laptop. Worst case scenario you can sell it for more than the $500 voucher...and the cheapest laptop will be right about $800.

no, i'm not a tuner so that's not really an issue.

i don't remember which desktop or which laptop they are, but i know they are the cheaper or cheapest ones while still having windows XP and i think they both have 2.85GHz but i'm not certain.

i can find more use in a laptop... my dad will most likely keep this desktop computer i'm not right now when i go to college or move out and i'll need a computer of my own. that won't be for another two years though. a digital camera would be sweet, i've been wanting one; i just see more practical use in a laptop.

keep the opinions coming.
