• Military guys: Is this Typical?

I had to go to Naval station Great Lakes in chicago to get a class I flight physical. It was my first military experience outside of USMC OCS. My recruiter flew myself and a Corporal into Ohare at 3pm. This is where the fun began.

-We were told to go to the Military liason office at the airport. There was no Liason at the airport
-We caught a shuttle bus to the base. We arrived at a command that had no idea who we were or why we were there. The first words out of the Master Chief's mouth were:"UUUUHHHHHHHHHH"
-HE drove us to the BOQ, where we supposed to be staying. THe BOQ had no idea who we were or why we were at the base.
-We went to McDonalds for dinner. We stood in line for and hour behind hundreds of Navy E-2's redeeming thier monopoly chips for McFlurries.
-The cab dropped us off at the mainside the following morning at 0545, and the MP's told us that the hospital was on the Recruit training side, 1.5 miles away.
-We walked to the correct hospital. we were supposed to be there by 0600. We arrived at 0559 covered in sweat.
-The hospital didn't open until 0730. We waited outside.
-The corpsman doing our physical was Seaman Barbie

I was amazed by the lack of organization. It was really funny though; it reminded me of a MASH episode.

This was the best part: we waited in the hospital lobby from 1100 to 1300 because all of the officers were having a chili cookoff.

While I was at Ft. Benning I think I figured that whole thing out.. In the military, nothing is done logicaly, why? Because the enemy thinks logicaly, so by doing things with no logic at all, the enemy cannot predict our next moves, giving us the advantage! Anyone else have any ideas?

for sure!

As far as the commands not knowing who you were and not excpecting you.... Well that's because the recruiter did not do his/her job correctly, which is common for recruiters. (I'm not saying all just that it's common to get incorrect information)

ive been at ft. benning, ft. bragg, ft. campbell, and ft. bliss while serving in the army. every post seemed more confusing than the last. i wouldnt sweat it, i think its just military SOP. oh and by the way, when i got out, i missed it, so i joined the guard, even more confusing, same standards, no time to train. still a great profession, i miss it alot.

Agreed, that is pretty typical of the military. Expect anyone that you need around to get something critical taken care of to be gone. Glad to see you've got such a great and positive attitude about it though!

Ha HA! I'm glad to hear that the powers-that-be haven't improved the environment in Great Lakes any since I was in there 5 years ago! Confusion is typical, just seems overly more-so at the GL facilites.
