  • anyone mod their x box?

no stranger to modding my PC but the x box is new to me. I want to up the ram and am curious about other mods I can do. is memory in the x box the same as PC or laptop memory os is it only for the x box. I have seen several chips you can add but I am not sure of their function. are the hard drives special for the consol (like a special plug for it or something) or can I just find a good deal on a 7200 RPM one from tigerdirect and swap it in?

I'm a little tipsy right now, but I'll try to form coherent sentences.

There is no point in going through the trouble of adding more RAM to your xbox unless you plan on running linux. Games aren't programmed to use more RAM, and its been proven that they will not run better or faster by adding more.

The process for adding more RAM is having a pro carefully removing/desoldering the ram chips from an old xbox motherboard, then soldering it onto extra spots on your motherboard. This is a painful and hard process that can only be done by a pro with specialized equipment.

Modchips for the xbox run from basic ROM chips that hold a mod BIOS, to chips that you can attach sensors and LCD screens to. In certain versions you can just overwrite the onboard BIOS chip with a modded one, or sometimes both.

Harddrives are just regular ATA drives. From the factory they come with 5400 RPM, 10 or 8 GB drives. The EIDE controller runs at ATA-33, so don't waste money on special UltraATA-100 drives or anything. If you don't understand that than don't worry, I can explain it later. To put it simply, yes, a regular 7200 rpm drive will work just fine.

I've modded a few different xbox's and experience with different versions and different mod chips. If you'd like more info or help, just send me an IM.

I have an XBox but havent thought of modding it. Cannot wait for the Xbox 360 to come out though. I wouldnt want to touch the insides of my xbox cause I am sure to ruin it.
